BYU now the TE factory
BYUCougars.com is announcing that both Johnny Harline and Daniel Coats have been added to the Mackey Award Watch List. The Mackey is awarded annually to the best Tight End in college sports. The award will be given in December.
Only Arizona State with TEs Jamal Lewis and Zach Miller and Missouri with TEs Chase Coffman and Martin Rucker join BYU on the list with more than one TE on the Watch List.
BYU has long been known as a breeding ground for stellar Quarterbacks, but is now receiving attention for producing a long line of excellent collegiate and NFL tight ends. Currently Johnny Harline was ranked as the 4th best TE in the nation, while Coats will be on the Watch List for the 3rd time in his career.
History of the Mackey Award
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
The John Mackey Award presented since 2000, lists five NFL players as alumni: Dallas Clark ('01) of the Indianapolis Colts, two-time Super Bowl Champion, Daniel Graham ('02) of the New England Patriots, Kellen Winslow, Jr. ('03) of the Cleveland Browns, Heath Miller ('04) of the 2006 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and Marcedes Lewis ('05) of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
