The Dude of WB has a lot to say about expansion today. Go and look at his tweets if interested.

Basically a network leads to expansion. A network really needs 14 members to get enough content. They need more exposure.
I do agree with him on the 14 number, but what I didn't like was his tweet saying BYU was out.

So far 83% of voters support expansion. I would guess that 76% of the 83% are fans of teams that want in.

Latest discussion.

Here's an examination of the candidates listed in order of perceived attractiveness. Remember, the margins are slim, and the longer the Big 12 waits to expand the more potential there is for this order to change.

• BYU: The Cougars football program, which plays as an independent, has the most resonance of any available school. BYU has a national following and a decorated history that includes star quarterbacks Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Ty Detmer. There are issues with BYU, such as the BYUtv network, tough geography and some finicky logistics that come with not playing on Sundays. But those problems can likely be resolved, as BYU has an increased desire to join the league because of the yawning perception gap between the Power Five and everyone else. BYU realizes it won't be treated like Notre Dame as an independent, so this seems like the most logical move for both sides.

Oklahoma, Kansas tried to join Big 10 in 2010. Here's something different to read. Big12 ticking timebomb?

Blog entry is interesting about BYU and debunks several myths.
Interesting that he says the biggest hang ups for BYU are research (or a lack thereof) and ego

I like his line of thinking, but he jumps to certain conclusions too quickly.

- Adding UIC for Olympic sports isn't going to do much for the Big 12 in Chicago...except get laughed at by the rest of the college sports world.

- Adding UC-Irvine, UC-Riverside, and UC-Davis seems to benefit a BYU and SDSU add, but wouldn't have the desired benefits for the Big 12. We're talking Big West and Big Sky level basketball added to a conference that gets 60-70% of its teams into the NCAA tournament.

The Big 12 would do much better to add BYU, CSU, Memphis and Cincinnati for all sports. This enlarges and fills in the Big 12 footprint in a meaningful way, but keeps the Big 12's identity. Houston would also be a decent add to help the Big 12 regain its foothold in East Texas. Actually, with CCG deregulation, three 5-team scheduling divisions could make a ton of sense:

NORTH: BYU, CSU, Kansas, Kansas St., Iowa St.
SOUTH: Texas, Tech, Oklahoma, OSU, Houston (gets UT and OU in DFW and Houston)
EAST: Baylor, TCU, WVU, Memphis, Cincinnati

(Just make sure to schedule such that Kansas, KSU, and ISU play in Texas each year)

You could make a Chicago and St. Louis impact by having a Big 12 v. B1G (or even MAC) challenge with games in Chicago and St. Louis with Kansas, Iowa St., Memphis, Cincinnati and other (new) Big 12 schools involved. St. Louis could be a decent venue for an occasional Big 12 basketball tournament.

The BYU and CSU adds would help to get a presence in the West - with later kickoff opportunities. And snag the Las Vegas Bowl from the MWC and get back the affiliation with the Holiday Bowl to help with California recruiting.
