We kind of had this discussion a few weeks ago about BYU's ability to get players to progress. I'm still waiting to hear which players BYU has had that should have progressed to the NBA, but didn't. There may be a few, but it seems that whenever we have a player go to the NBA they are overachievers rather than high recruits that have progressed; including Jimmer and Davies most recently. Before that, Hansen, Araujo. None of these guys were top 100 recruits. Have we ever had a top 50 or top 100 recruit not go to the NBA?
I agree. Good coaches can get their players to reach the maximum level their talent can get them to, and I think Rose actually does really well in that area. The problem is that the natural athletic talent level in the NBA is so high that a lesser athlete who works hard and has reached his peak still won't make it there for very long if at all. Also, there are top athletes who still don't make the NBA because they didn't work hard enough (or injuries), but I can't think of a single example of a player like that who went to BYU.

If you don't believe basketball at BYU is going to get pretty exciting over the next few years, then you have to believe the new players coming are not really any better than the ones they've had before and all the recruiting services have missed on all of them. Possible, but not likely.
You could also doubt in the coaching staff's ability to take great athletes and get to the next level.
The problem with that reasoning is that few would argue that previous recruiting classes had many "great athletes." At least the recruiting experts didn't rate those guys that way.

We already know Jimmer was not highly recruited but became a star. He can help a player do that at least at the college level.

I guess another option would be to say Rose gets more out of the less than 4star guys than he should but at the same time will get LESS than what he should from the higher recruited guys. But I don't think that's very logical. I think it's that Rose has just gotten better at recruiting combined with the talent level of LDS players increasing. And now those players are just starting to arrive and we should expect more.

But we'll know soon enough. I think we take a big step forward starting this season already and another one next year.

If you search the message boards from 2011 we got off to a great start but there was still a lot of typical skepticism from the fans up until the conference opener at UNLV. Even though we were 14-1 there were a lot of posts from fans saying they didn't really believe it until we could win at UNLV, which most thought we couldn't do since we'd had trouble there in the past. But we did win that game pretty convincingly and suddenly the bandwagon was overflowing.

No I don't watch HS bball, but the scouts and coaches have. Childs final 5 list was down to Auburn, Boise State, BYU, Vanderbilt and Princeton. Baxter had offers from UCLA and ASU. Harding only had ID St offer.
As far as Childs goes, his list of offers had a few teams that were higher profile than the some of the ones he narrowed down to his top 5. He just seems to be a little atypical in that he seemed to care more about which ones he really liked moreso than going for the bigger names.

ESPN says Harding had a Stanford offer and interest from Oregon and Oregon State. I also thought ASU was in the mix, but it's not saying that now.

Connor Harding, 6'6" SG who can really shoot it. Gavin Baxter, 6'7" wing with 7'2" wingspan, great bounce!

Conner Harding, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Pocatello, Idaho; Gavin Baxter, a 6-7 small forward from Timpview High School and Yoeli Childs, a 6-7 power forward from Bingham High School in South Jordan, are expected to sign letters-of-intent with the BYU men’s basketball program on Wednesday.

Harding averaged 16.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists as a junior at Highland High and was named Class 5A All-State. Baxter averaged 15.5 points per game and helped lead Timpview to the Class 4A quarterfinals last season. Childs averaged a double-double (16.4 points, 10.7 rebounds) as Bingham advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals.

BYU’s 2016 Class is rated No. 35 by ESPN.com.

Another recruit expected to join the Cougars as a preferred walk-on is Steven Beo, a 6-3 shooting guard from Richland, Wash. Beo averaged 27 points per game as a junior and set the school record with 49 points in a single game.
Are these guys really that good??
Why wouldn't they be? Rose has become a great recruiter.
Because hype doesn't always equal reality and recruit rankings aren't a crystal ball. Let me ask it this way: Has anyone seen these guys play or know enough about them to justify a high ranking class?
Sure, recruiting services miss sometimes. But are we just asking this because they're our players now so they can't really be that good? I think as a fanbase we tend as a group to suffer from some chronic low self esteem as it pertains to the team we follow. Maybe there are reasons for it, but the fact is the players we've been signing (now this makes 7 4-star guys in the last couple of years) are undisputably higher ranked than the guys we had been signing before the Mika/Haws/Emery class. Something is up with recruiting because while the rankings services might miss on a few guys here and there, the odds that they missed on 7 guys going to the same team within a short time is pretty low. And we already saw what Mika was like, so he's kind of a sure thing now. Emery should be soon also.

If you don't believe basketball at BYU is going to get pretty exciting over the next few years, then you have to believe the new players coming are not really any better than the ones they've had before and all the recruiting services have missed on all of them. Possible, but not likely.

Imagine if Frank signed. What, about top 15 class? Gotta like this class. Not sure I love it, but who did Rose miss on? Other than Frank?
Jabari?
