I agree that BYU needs to get an additional FBS payday home game each year. But, 8 home games is a pipe dream.

Look, the athletic department has $6-8M profit most years. We can take $1M or so of the profits from the previous year to buy the extra home game. We'd probably come out ahead, because we would have an additional game's worth of ticket sales and TV revenue and save on the travel expenses for the 6th road game. The majority of P5 schools do get 7 home games per year. This will help BYU to make up some of the P5 financial gap. And the FBS home game should be teams like Toledo, NIU, MTSU, NMSU, etc.
Yes BYU should buy a minimum of two home games per year but I think three should be the goal. Ticket sales alone - even for FCS games - have to be north of $2M. Just break even and it's better than another 1:1 with SJSU. And BYU should never give up a 1 and done or a 2:1 again.

2013 - at USC
2014 - at Tennessee
2015 - at Washington
2016 - at USC
2017 - at Wisconsin
2019 - at LSU

May be a 3-for-1, where we write a check to the Aggies each year except when we play in Logan once every four years.

With independence and a national fan base, BYU wants some road games. After the second payday home game, the next step is to get an *annual* neutral-site game as part of a "Pioneer" or "Beehive" series, similar to Notre Dame's "Shamrock Series." Get ESPN to commit to show it on ABC and the ticket sales and TV revenue could be split with the opponent (or, go to NBC, FOX, and CBS).

The home schedule in 2019 is:
Utah
USC
Washington
Boise St
Idaho St

People are going to buy tickets if we add Wagner again but I'd try to buy that away game at UMass and turn it into a home game. Add a home game with NMSU, UTEP, Tx St, or Liberty and get a 2-1 with UNLV, SJSU, Nevada, etc.

We should have 7-8 home games a year.
how many schools get 8 home games a year?
This year: Arkansas, LSU if you count the BYU game, SC if you count a neutral site game 60 miles from campus just from the SEC. Every other year TAMU plays 8 home games. There are always a couple from the B1G and sometimes the PAC, Big 12 and ACC.
Maybe 5 teams in all of college football have 8 home games, and you thing that BYU should be good enough to have that every other year? I don't think that that is very realistic.
TAMU has a model that would be ideal for BYU. Six teams they play home and away every year. Three more rotate for home and away. And Three home games against inferior opponents.

It would cost BYU two million per year to buy three home games and they'd have 7 or 8 home games per year. Totally worth a regular top 25 ranking. That's how TAMU and the rest of the SEC do it.

I still think we need better teams. Some in the MWC still won't play. We could add more AAC teams but that is a lot of travel.

I also like playing the instate schools but they have a responsibility to our SOS. If USU can't be a top 50 team then we should drop the game and find someone better.
Using that logic, we shouldn't play ECU (#118), SJSU (#131), Fresno (#179), UNLV (#145), UMass (#141), and Hawaii (#104).

The reality is that our schedules cannot be put together without including teams that are ranked worse than #50.

The part that I'm looking forward to for this year's Utah State game is the number of BYU transfers that seem to end up there contributing for them. I checked the USU spring depth chart and saw these familiar names:
- Dallin Leavitt - as with last year, he is the #1 nickle back and boundary safety on the depth chart
- Quin Ficklin - #1 Center this spring--he was Koroma's primary backup as a walk-on and played some FB as well before transferring after the season. I saw unconfirmed (of course) reports that there was a school discipline issue there.
- Roman Andrus - #2 Left Tackle on the OL. He redshirted as a defensive lineman for BYU in 2012 before serving a mission. He was on the scout team in 2015, then ended up at Snow College last season playing DL, but signed with Utah State and has made the shift to OL.
