NFL Draft News for BYU and Todd Watkins

We may have been disappointed with some dropped catches in the Notre Dame game last year, but just about every rational BYU fan knows that Todd Watkins senior speedy wide receiver last year for the BYU Cougars was always a deep threat and a potent part of the Cougars offense.

The question is, where will he go in the draft? Fox Sports has him listed as one of the top WR's saying:

Out of Brigham Young University, wide receiver Todd Watkins should be a solid choice in this year's NFL draft.

They even post this highlight video.

Patriots also have some interesting things to say about Todd Watkins, rating him as the #7 receiver in the draft. According to patriots.com:

Todd Watkins, BYU – One of the more underrated receiver prospects. Tall receiver who is a big-time deep threat. Scored 15 touchdowns in two seasons at BYU, despite the team’s inconsistent play at the quarterback position. Very good hands. Has a knack of making tough catches look easy. Made a lot of acrobatic plays in college. Readjusts well to the ball. Needs work on his route running and with his slim build he doesn’t break a lot of tackles. Has excellent speed and acceleration. At the very least will be a dangerous deep threat in the NFL.
Watkins definitely has the ability to play at the next level, and it's looking pretty good for him the draft.

Best QB University

Richard Cirminiello, with CollegeFootballNews.com, has come up with a list of the best Universities for Quarterbacks based on College and Professional performances. Where does BYU end up on that list? 2nd, behind only Miami and just ahead of USC.

Here's what he said about BYU:

2. BYU
The Flag-Bearer
– Steve Young
The Ensemble – Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer, Marc Wilson, Robbie Bosco, Gifford Nielsen, Virgil Carter, Steve Sarkisian, Gary Sheide, John Walsh, Brandon Doman and Kevin Feterik

No university was more synonymous with prolific passing attacks in the 1970s and 1980s than BYU. Under the innovative eyes of LaVell Edwards and Norm Chow, the Cougars rose to national prominence and cranked out All-American quarterbacks like a Pez dispenser. Nielsen, Wilson, Young, McMahon, Bosco and Detmer all ascended to the height of the sport, bagging a heap of records along the way. Cougar quarterbacks finished in the top 10 of the Heisman vote an unthinkable 11 times between 1974 and 1991.

While the drop-off at the position has been steep since Detmer became the NCAA’s all-time leading passer in 1991, BYU was still home to Walsh, Sarkisian, Feterik and Doman, each of whom threw for more than 3,500 yards at least once over the past decade.

I'd say this is a pretty fair placement.

BYU's Blue and White game

It was great to get out to LaVell Edward's Stadium and enjoy some football in the spring. It was a beautiful day and the experience was great, as always.

I had hoped to get some great pictures, but BYU asked that there be no digital photographs or recordings of the scrimmage, so I'm afraid you're out of luck.

What did look great though were the running back's, Curtis Brown did not play, he was sick that day, but the other running back's looked awesome, Fui had an amazing touchdown run in which he was stopped behind the line of scrimmage, but powered his way forward.

The defensive secondary looked much improved from last year too, keeping all the plays in front of them, breaking up several passes and making great tackles on receivers.

The offense looked a little shakey, but thats to be considered considering many of the offensive players sat out, and even a defender any where near the QB called the play to be whistled dead.

All in all, a great time on the field with the boys.
