It's also a great advantage over the guy who was playing last year, to take 4 years off from playing any organized games. It gives the "old" guy a lot of time to prepare himself mentally for when, someday, he actually gets back onto the field.

Yeah, that's the problem. When you think you've got them beat before you start, you don't come to play. EVERY game is a big game.
