Re: BYuCONN Live Game Thread
I'd say at least half of our penalties wouldn't be called later in the season. These refs had happy whistled that they couldn't stop tweeting. Someone reigned them in at halftime, but the calls were ridiculous all around in that first half. Those were some of the weakest personal fouls I've ever seen as well as the hands to the face calls being more phantom than real on both sides. Hopefully all the refs got their whistling practice out of the way during week one.frdbtr wrote:Bronco likes to say that players play the way they are coached. The penalty issues need to be cleaned up by the coaches. They played undisciplined.byufan4ever wrote:I learned that our players are talented, but stupid. Way too many penalties, especially some big ones that could have easily been avoided. And Anae needs to do better in the 3rd quarter. But I'm really happy with the talent level. Oh, and special teams is going to lose us a game this year.

In the post game on KSL, Bronco said he was really looking forward to watching Jurgens in this game. Hevsaid they hadn't talked about him before the game but had been expecting good things from him (iirc). I don't know whether that really addresses your comment, but it is relatedbeauso79 wrote:I wonder if Blackmon would be the one in Jurgens spot if he were eligible to play?mtnradio wrote:I'm impressed with Jurgens ... there is a bright spot! I thought the officials were consistent. They called a lot of penalties, but I thought most were correct when watching the replays.
BYU can reduce many of those on their own by self-discipline.

It's funny you say that Howell should bench him... Howell is PoVey's brother-in-law.beauso79 wrote:Yeah #7 is a joke on defense. Re: BYuCONN Live Game Thread
I agree, the calls were there and they weren't particularly one sided, but a lot of these things are not calls later in the season or even in the second game. The sideline penalty came without a sideline warning. The personal fouls were typically shoulder rubs, not real hits and the fishing penalty was just dumb. Cleaning this stuff up should be early to do. Definitely killed many drives due to penalties yesterday, that was the kicker.SpiffCoug wrote:I thought the officials were consistent. Re: BYuCONN Live Game Thread
I actually thought the DB's did very well in this game. I was specifically looking at the cushions and they weren't much more than 7 yards, but when they did give more room UConn took advantage. I wish we'd try some bump and run.
Taysom is a poised leader now, which makes this team dangerous. Very dangerous.
The O-line looked mean.
The penalties sucked, but they were all penalties of aggression and youthful stupidity. Both of those can be tapered down. But the fact of the matter is you have to be willing to punch guys in the mouth in their house. I expect the same nasty attitude in Austin next week. Punch UT straight in the mouth early and keep up the talking all game long. Let them know that we own them (without drawing anymore 15 yarders.)

Well, I was able to watch the game from my hospital room after surgery. 35-10 was a great way to distract me from my pain! I was frustrated with the penalties, but I still think most of them were bogus. Without the penalties, it would have been a huge blowout. I thought Taysom looked great. Nice start to the season!

I like this a lot. A solid Cougar win can cure anything.IowaCougar wrote:Well, I was able to watch the game from my hospital room after surgery. 35-10 was a great way to distract me from my pain!
