Spiff's Statistical Observations & Other Nonsense

Post by SpiffCoug »

The first game is over and BYU was victorious. So let's dive right into the stats and see what there is to see.

- BYU's 35 points are the most vs an FBS opponent in a season opener since scoring 42 vs Syracuse in 2002.

- The 10 points allowed are the 3rd fewest allowed in an opener since 1994.

- The 513 yards of offense are the most vs an FBS opponent in an opener since gaining 615 vs Syracuse in 2002.

- BYU's PER of 177.14 was the highest season opening PER vs an FBS opponent since 187.42 vs Tulane in 2001.

- With the missed FG, BYU is now 15 of 31 on FGs in season openers since 1994.

- BYU's three previous season opening opponents have won 2, 3 and 2 games respectively. UConn had the look of a team that might keep that trend going.

- BYU's 4 sacks were the most by the Cougars since sacking FSU's Chris Weinke 4 times in 2000.

- The Cougars won the PER battle. The team with the better PER has now won 26 of the last 27 and 34 of the last 35 games.

- BYU's PER was 177.14, improving their record to 51-3 (.968) in games with a PER above 175 since 1984.

- BYU"s 15 penalites were the most in a season since being flagged 16 times vs Georgia Tech in 2003, BYU was also flagged 19 times vs UTEP in 1990.

- Five Bronco's ten season openers have featured doube-digit penalties.

- The 15 penalties were also the most for a Bronco coached team.

- Taysom Hill targeted RBs 14 times vs UConn. They were targeted 4 times in last year's season opener. The position group didn't reach 14 targets until game 4 last year.

- Hill was 8 for 8 on 3rd Down passing. It was the first perfect throwing day on 3rd down since Jake Heaps was 7 for 7 vs Colorado St in 2010.

BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)

BYU also averaged over 3 points per possession. They will likely win all the games they do that this year.
