BYU vs Opponent Average through Week 5

Post by SpiffCoug »

Even though it was a bye week for BYU, the Cougars’ four opponents all played games, so we get more data to see how BYU is doing against our opponents.

So here is how BYU is doing compared to opponent season averages. As always, I'm comparing the BYU game to the opponents' season averages (with the BYU game removed from those calculations). I have also begun adding in the numbers and the changes from the previous week.

UConn
Held UConn 6 points (10) below their scoring average (16). (-2)
Allowed UConn 8.8 yards (71) below their rushing average (79.8 ). (-17.8 )

Allowed UConn 113.8 yards (355) above their total offense average (241.3). (-22.1)
Held UConn 15.7 PER points (97.62) below their PER average (113.36). (-5.1)
BYU scored 8.3 points (35) more than their scoring defense average (26.8 ). (-3)
BYU gained 116.3 more yards (205) than their rushing defense average (88.8 ). (+16)
BYU Gained 229.3 more yards (513) than their total defense average (283.8 ). (+4 )
BYU was 41.3 PER points (177.14) above their PER defense average (135.81). (-0.7)

This was actually a decent week for UConn. They actually ran the ball well this week, making BYU’s run defence improve from giving up more yards than average to giving up fewer yards than average. But this is still a very bad football team that BYU thoroughly beat.

Texas
Held Texas 19.0 points (7) below their scoring average (26). (-1.5)
Held Texas 51.3 yards (82) below their rushing average (133.3). (-12.2)
Held Texas 76.7 yards (258) below their total offense average (334.7). (-1.8 )
Held Texas 10.3 PER points (116.40) below their PER average (126.70 ). (+1.2)
BYU scored 32 points (41) more than their scoring defense average (9). (+4.5)
BYU gained 91.7 more yards (248) than their rushing defense average (156.3). (-8.3)
BYU Gained 145.7 more yards (429) than their total defense average (268.5). (-19.8 )
BYU was 37.7 points (115.57) above their PER defense average (77.84). (+16.1)

Texas won. And hopefully, it’s a team that continues to improve. Hopefully, Barry Alvarez is doing this type of evaluation and realize that BYU’s passing game while somewhat anaemic vs the Longhorns was actually a pretty good day.

Houston
Held Houston 8.7 points (25) below their scoring average 33.7. (0)
Held Houston 206 yards (10) below their rushing average (215.7). (0)
Held Houston 81.0 yards (325) below their total offense average (406.0). (0)

Allowed Houston 33.9 PER (127.09) points above their PER average (93.20). (0)
BYU scored 19.3 points (33) more than their scoring defense average (13.7). (0)
BYU gained 198 more (323) yards than their rushing defense average (125.0). (0)
BYU Gained 250.7 more yards (523) than their total defense average (272.3). (0)
BYU was 32.3 points (109.12) above their PER defense average (76.81). (0)

Houston had a bye so no changes here. But I had incorrectly calculated Houston’s Defensive PER las week. It was a good throwing day for both sets of Cougars in this game.

Virginia
Allowed Virginia -0.3 points (33) below their scoring average (33.3). (+4)
Allowed Virginia 30.8 yards (192) above their rushing average (161.3). (+30.9)
Allowed Virginia 138.8 yards (519) above their total offense average (380.3). (+46.5)

Held Virginia 16.7 PER points (109.94) below their PER average (126.68). (+3.4)
BYU scored 22.3 points (41) more than their scoring defense average (18.8 ). (+2)
BYU gained 73.0 more yards (145) than their rushing defense average (72.0). (+12.7)

BYU gained 3.5 fewer yards (332) than their total defense average (335.5). (+18.5)
BYU was 47.6 points (153.51) above their PER defense average (105.93). (+1.7)

Virginia continued to play well offensively and defensively as BYU’s performance gained a lot of ground on the UVA averages.

Season Totals:
BYU has held four of four opponents below their scoring averages.
BYU has three of four opponents below their rushing averages.

BYU has held two of four opponents below their total offense averages.
BYU has held three of four opponents below the PER averages.
BYU has score more points against all four opponents scoring defenses.
BYU has gained more rushing yards against all four opponents rushing defenses.
BYU has gained more total yards against three of four opponents total defenses.
BYU has been above four of four opposing PER defenses.

BYU Averages vs Opponent Averages: (strictly comparing BYU averages vs Combined Opponent averages)
BYU’s Scoring Defense average is holding opponents 8.5 points (18.8 ) below their combined scoring average (27.2).
BYU’s Rushing Defense average is holding teams 58.8 yards (88.8 ) below their combined rushing average (147.5).
BYU’s Total Defense average is allowing teams 23.7 (364.3) above their combined total offense average (340.5)
BYU’s Defensive PER is holding teams 2.1 points (112.67) below their combined PER average (114.78).
BYU’s Scoring average is 20.5 points (37.5) above their opponents combined scoring defense (22.2).

BYU’s PER average is 40.4 PER points (139.49) above their opponents combined PER defense (99.07)

As always, give me a double check on my colors.

BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)
