BYU vs Opponent Averages thru Week 8

Thru Week 8

Another week another 4th quarter collapse. This time, BYU lost its first game since 1987 when leading by 14 or more at the half. So here is how BYU is doing compared to opponent season averages. As always, I'm comparing the BYU game to the opponents' season averages (with the BYU game removed from those calculations). I have also begun adding in the numbers and the changes from the previous week.

BYU gained 138.5 more yards (601) than their total defense average (462.5).

BYU was 6.6 PER points (137.26) below their PER defense average (143.90).

Much like the UCF game, BYU looked like they had righted the ship and were going to go up three scores, only see an untimely offensive fumble derail the Cougars’ efforts and give all the momentum to the opponents. While the defense did stop the 300-yard passing game streak at four games, they did allow opponents to score more than 30 for the fourth straight game. Who knows what the season holds from here on out? Anyone’s guess is as good as mine – which for the record is 3-2 at best.

Season Totals:
BYU has held three of seven opponents below their scoring averages.BYU has five of seven opponents below their rushing averages.BYU has held three of seven opponents below their total offense averages.
BYU has held four of seven opponents below the PER averages.
BYU has score more points against six of seven opponents scoring defenses.
BYU has gained more rushing yards against all seven opponents rushing defenses.
BYU has gained more total yards against all seven opponents total defenses.
BYU has been above five of seven opposing PER defenses.

Re: BYU vs Opponent Averages thru Week 8

Attached is a screen shot of my spreadsheet comparing how BYU did against the first seven opponents in 2013 and 2014.

You'll see that BYU held the first six opponents below their scoring average last year, but only the first three this year.

All seven opponents were below their rushing averages last year, but two have surpassed it this year.

Last year only three opponents failed to meet their total offense totals, but this year four have failed (one only surpassed it by 1.5 yards).

In both years three teams failed to meet their PER averages.

Scoring offense is about the same in that BYU surpassed opposing scoring defenses six times.

BYU surpassed rushing totals in all seven games.

This year we've beaten opponent total defense numbers in every game versus six times last year.

And BYU has five good PER games on offense this year vis a vis four last year.
