BYU vs Opponent Averages Thru Week 9

Post by SpiffCoug »

Last week it was another week another 4th quarter collapse; this week it’s another week another poor performance for the defense and average performance from the offense. BYU lost for the fourth straight game – only the 2nd time this has happened under Coach Bronco Mendenhall and just the third time since 1975.

The 55-30 loss to Boise St was not as close as the score indicates. The Broncos had as many incomplete passes as they did touchdown passes. They scored 41 points in the first 30 minutes and racked up an obscene 423 yards of offense with 18 first downs. Those 18 first downs were more than BYU gave up for the entire games against Texas and Houston earlier this year.

But it is no longer early in the year and the Cougars are in the midst of some of their most depressing play in four seasons – if not then under Bronco’s tenure.

So let’s see how BYU is doing compared to opponent season averages. As always, I'm comparing the BYU game to the opponents' season averages (with the BYU game removed from those calculations). I have also begun adding passing yards to those categories displayed.

UConn
Held UConn 4.7 points (10) below their scoring average (14.7)
Held UConn 8.8 yards (71) below their rushing average (79.8 )

Allowed UConn 100.7yards (284) above their passing average (183.3)
Allowed UConn 91.8 yards (355) above their total offense average (263.2)

Held UConn 23.9 PER points (97.62) below their PER average (121.56)
BYU scored 10 points (35) more than their scoring defense average (25)
BYU gained 95.5 more yards (205) than their rushing defense average (109.5)
BYU gained 81.3 more yards (308 ) than their passing defense average (226.7)
BYU gained 176.8 more yards (513) than their total defense average (336.2)
BYU was 45.9 PER points (177.14) above their PER defense average (131.28 )

UConn will likely remain the worst team on BYU’s schedule for another month – until Savannah St comes to Provo. And this game remains a very good performance on both sides of the ball.

Texas
Held Texas 15.7 points (7) below their scoring average (22.7)
Held Texas 63.6 yards (82) below their rushing average (145.6)
Held Texas 39.6 yards (176) below their passing average (215.6)
Held Texas 103.1 yards (258 ) below their total offense average (361.1)
Held Texas 2.8 PER points (116.40) below their PER average (119.15)
BYU scored 19.0 points (41) more than their scoring defense average (22)
BYU gained 80.6 more yards (248 ) than their rushing defense average (167.4)
BYU gained 11 more yards (181) than their passing defense average (170.0)
BYU gained 91.6 more yards (429) than their total defense average (337.4)
BYU was 9.7 PER points (115.57) above their PER defense average (105.89)

This is BYU’s only completely dominating victory. If this game was replayed now, current form suggests the result might be different.

Held Houston 3.7 points (25) below their scoring average (28.7)
Held Houston 173.5 yards (10) below their rushing average (183.5)

Thanks for breaking out passing yardage. It highlights a season long issue on defense other than Vs Texas.

I see an unexpected bright spot in the BSU Data. The BYU passing offense was close to an average opponent performance vs BSU.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.
