Re: NFL Draft 2015
Add these results to a couple 6-6 or 7-5 seasons and the confluence of variables portend bleak times ahead. This is why I am saying that TH in desperate moves is selling out to get that Big 12 or P5 invite. It just is What it is. But Espn exposure and playing big teams aren't going to matter to recruits if BYU doesnt put together some good seasons. Getting rolled by the likes of USU on your home field when a bunch of recruits are visiting will and has turned off recruits.

Re: NFL Draft 2015
To be fair, how many, if any, of those years from 66' to 94(?) when there were more than 7 rounds in the NFL draft, did BYU have no one taken in the 1st 7 rounds?Brayden Green wrote:
That seems like a much better comparison:
From 1966-2010 BYU had X years with no one taken in the 1st 7 rounds. From 2010-2015 that has happened 3x.

Re: NFL Draft 2015
To answer my own question:
1969: 1 player selected in the 8th round
1970: 1 player selected in the 14th rounds
1974: 2 players selected in rounds 10 & 14
1979: 2 players selected in rounds 8 & 10
1992: 1 player selected in the 9th round
1994: 0 players selected
So I just added 5 years to that list.
Additional years with just one player in 1st 7 rounds:
1977: 1 player selected in 5th round
1984: 1 player selected in 1st round
1988: 1 player selected in 5th round
1989: 1 player selected in 3rd round
1990: 1 player selected in 3rd round
1993: 1 player selected in 4th round
1996: 1 player selected in 3rd round
1997: 1 player selected in 6th round
2004: 1 player selected in 7th round
1969: 1 player selected in the 8th round

So the chicken littles can go back to their roosts? Not too much has really changed over the years it seems as far as draft day goes.SpiffCoug wrote:To answer my own question:

Re: NFL Draft 2015
Maybe a little different. Maybe if there is an 8th through 14th rounds we get three or four selected this year. Good chance for three or four from Fua, PoVey, Leslie, Wesly, and Mehina with other possible candidates being Bills, Daniel, Harvey, Kafu, Arellano, and Lasike. Apo I think was doomed to be a UDFA because of injuries.BoiseBYU wrote:So the chicken littles can go back to their roosts? Re: NFL Draft 2015
And Bronco did have a player he recruited, coached and brought back to the program get drafted. But he didn't finish his career at BYU because he couldn't handle the rigors of BYU. Tayo Fabaluje was drafted, I can't believe that if he had stayed at BYU that teams would have passed on him just because he was a Cougar.

Re: NFL Draft 2015
I'm sure if you show potential recruits that info, they will feel much better about choosing BYU, and skip out on teams that currently put players in the NFL... (sarcasm)
Nice job though, my fears are slightly assuaged. It won't help with recruits. Not at all. If you are NFL bound, there are still 2 programs in Utah better than BYU if being drafted is your primary measure.
It has to change, or BYU sees how much further the 8-5 rabbit hole goes in the coming years.
And to Tayo, there is a reason he didn't play for BYU. Bronco didn't bring him back. The reason Tayo came back was because he had someone in Provo he could live with, and couldn't afford to pay TCU tuition and living costs off of scholarship. It had nothing to do with Bronco or our football program. He lived here and went to BYU uninterested in the football program.

With his football career on hold, Fabuluje needed help and found it by returning to Utah. He knew a family from Texas that had relocated to Utah, and he could stay there for free.
Plus, the tuition for BYU was significantly less than TCU for someone like Fabuluje paying out of pocket. That, not football, Fabuluje contends, is why he returned to BYU.
“Everyone made the assumption that I was going back to play football, but it was my living situation,” Fabuluje said. “I had a place to live, I was working three jobs that semester to help pay for school and I had to take classes to remain eligible to even get a chance to play in 2014.”
It was a busy semester for Fabuluje, taking a full course load plus his side jobs. He worked as a security guard/greeter at a high-end luxury store, at a sports retail shop and sold cellphones.
There were many times that semester Fabuluje wondered, ‘What am I doing here?’
“But I knew what I was doing,” he said. “It’s something I had to do for my future.”

Re: NFL Draft 2015
I think part of the problem is also that Bronco 1) isn't recruiting guys who truly want to go to the NFL and 2) the guys who come to BYU aren't wanting to go to the NFL.
I think the majority of players come to BYU because they want to come to BYU. They'll play BYU football but they want more than what BYU can offer them on the gridiron.
They're coming for the Mormon experience. For the quality education. For the marriage pool. They're coming for many reasons outside of football.

Re: NFL Draft 2015
Bronco's priority when it comes to recruiting is finding guys that want to play at BYU. That's priority uno and as Spiff mentions that doesn't equate to guys headstrong on playing the NFL or even guys with the ability to play in the NFL.
I also think Bronco and BYU suffer a bit from post-mission perspectives. Prior to the mission field, these players' self identities and ambitions revolved heavily around football. Players go on missions. Football takes a back seat and they see life without football is just as nice if not better. Suddenly, there is more to life than playing in Sunday.
