Re: Dose of reality
They've been complaining about his vanilla play calling for years. Even during the Superbowl win year, they wanted him gone. The Pass on the half yard line in last years superbowl and the poor play of the offense this year has cooked them for good. I don't think he will be there much longer.Wolverine wrote:That right there is the dose of reality of any and all fan bases when things go south.frdbtr wrote:Ask seattle seahawk fans how much they like Bevell. Even if we have nobody to replace him with, the trend still speaks for itself. Besides, that's why Holmoe gets paid the big bucks.Screamineagle wrote:Who do you want to replace him with???????????KingCoug wrote:Bronco's first five years he had four 10 or 11 win seasons, was 3-2 vs Utah, 3-0 vs Utah State, 3-1 in bowl games, and finished ranked four times. His second five years he had one 10 win season, a 7 win season, and three straight 8 win seasons. He went 0-4 vs Utah, 3-2 vs Utah State, 3-2 in bowl games, and finished ranked only once.
We also went from a bunch of players in the NFL when Bronco took over to relatively few.
The trend is obvious.

Re: Dose of reality
Several of you speak of trends, but to really know if there is a trend, you need to determine SOS. Comparing a ten win season against a 100 SOS schedule five years ago to an 8-5 season against a 60 SOS does not tell you that there is trend downward. Or vice versa. And trends aren't trends if seasons are significantly impacted by injuries or student withdrawals. At least that's my thinking. Has someone looked and tried to account for these factors?

Re: Dose of reality
Okay, let's play a game. Based on the statistics below, can you name the coach and the program? Here is a coach in his 17th season leading a P5 program. Do you notice any "trends" over the course of those 17 years? Would you have pulled the trigger on this coach based on the 'trend" of the past five seasons? Do you think that at any point in time during this coach's tenure there were certain fans of this fan base unhappy and clamoring for this coach to be fired along with his staff? Do you think that those fans who appreciated the hard work and commitment of this coach and his staff, despite some ups and downs, were accused of being "blind", having "low expectations", and just "seeing the Emperor's New Clothes"? Do you think this coach is currently on the hot seat and in danger of being fired after this season?

Man, whoever this guy is, he really knows how to wet the bed. Never less than 2 losses? Should have been fired after 2005.Wolverine wrote:Okay, let's play a game. Kirk Ferentz. Iowa. Not sure this guy really proves the point you are trying to make though...Wolverine wrote:Okay, let's play a game. Ferentz is a coach who has turned his career around this season by, after an embarrassing loss in the TaxSlayer Bowl last year, thrown out all the new-age feel-goodery and taken a "back-to-basics" approach in his coaching. In January, nearly all the local media and fans were calling for Ferentz to be fired based on his marked lack of improvement.
If Kirk Ferentz is your model, the question becomes--is Bronco capable of the same self-reinvention to do some plateau-busting of his own like Kirk Ferentz did this off-season when it became apparent that his approach over the previous five years was not working?
A lot of Iowa's success this year is attributable to the dissatisfied fans who made their voices heard loudly enough to make the coach take steps to improve rather than continuing down his path.

You do realize his first year was 1-10, right? The first number is the amount of games played that year. He's had 3 losing seasons, including one 3 years ago.
Anyone who can't tell the difference in the team's talent level (up...way up) since Bronco's first few teams is insane. The talent level this year over last year alone is crazy different. The strength of schedule is so much better right now than BYU has ever played, yet Bronco continues to win at a rate comparable to Lavell Edwards, and probably close to doubling every other BYU coach ever (win%).
If you look at any consecutive 11 seasons in Edwards 29 years as coach, you will see that Bronco approaches the same winning percentage over that time, and actually exceeds it for good portions, especially at the end. And he does so playing a tougher SOS, with more school imposed restrictions, tougher enforcement of the honor code, less scholarships, and more teams across the country trying to be good at football (and several schools having much more money to do it with).
When Bronco leaves, it's much more probable BYU will hire a Mike Locksley at UNM type than an Urban Meyer at Utah type.
