Word is he is a friend of Tyler Luatua and they are from the same home town, same graduation year.

That's a good question. I'm not sure what exception he is claiming but there are several things that might be possible:

My guess based on the possibilities could be a family hardship exception (his family is not well off and from California and he was playing in Miami). But I don't know for sure.

He is physically imposing: 6'4" 320 lbs similar to Tuni Kanuch (i.e. Miami moved him from the defensive line to offensive line). Kalani is definitely focusing on getting physical specimens who have the potential to dominate their opposition.
Didn't receive a lot of offers likely due to previous academic issues but seems to have resolved this.
