Taysom Hill named the starter
In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, Taysom Hill has been named the starting QB.
He is a special talent and may be the best athlete BYU has ever had.

Further proof that BYU coaches read Cougar Corner:

Re: Taysom Hill named the starter
Great decision by the coaches. I don't think there was a wrong choice to be made given the immense talent of both players.
I liked Taysom's comments about being comfortable in the offense. I think Detmer is asking less of Taysom. I wonder if he told Taysom to not worry about running. Focus on the passing game and opportunities to run will present themselves. Follow the Steve Young model. Be a pass-first QB and your legs make you more dangerous.

A great decision, and really the only decision they really could have made. I just hope he can stay healthy!

Re: Taysom Hill named the starter
I wonder what Kyle Gunther will have to say about this. All he ever has to say about Taysom is how he's a bowling ball made out of butcher knives that can run all over you but can throw to save his life. He clearly hasn't watched Taysom at all over the past 2 seasons. Also, anyone who thinks Taysom can't air it out and throw deep is going to be surprised.
Tanner is a phenomenal quarterback, and might be the best drop back passer in BYU history when all is said and done, but Taysom is quite possibly the best athlete ever to suit up for BYU. That he can throw as well as run better than many running backs makes him one of the most dangerous QB's in the country if he stays healthy, which I think he does this year.

Re: Taysom Hill named the starter
I'm a little disappointed that Tanner isn't going to redshirt. I agree he should be the backup and get the backup reps, but I don't want him to play unless he absolutely has to. I'd much rather have Tanner for 3 more years instead of 2.

Re: Taysom Hill named the starter
Not a surprising decision. Taysom hill has been throwing as good as Tanner Mangum in practice if the practice reports are to be believed, and add on his running ability and it becomes scary. Tanner will get his shot and may leave BYU with most of the throwing records when all is said and done with him. I'm sure the non redshirt thing was something that the coaches decided with his input. I hope if for some reason he doesn't see the field this year that they apply for the redshirt anyway though.

The decision shouldn't surprise anyone who follows BYU football. We all knew this would be the case.
