Rooting guide Week 4 2016

Post by scott715 »

http://www.cougarboard.com/board/messag ... d=16560361

The goals for BYU are:

1. To achieve the highest ranking possible
2. To be bowl eligible and play the best bowl team possible
3. To win as many games as possible
4. To get into the Big 12
5. To be better than Utah

If you want to see these goals accomplished here is your rooting guide:

A. Cheer for BYU. Duh.

BYU (1-2) over West Virginia (2-0)

B. Cheer for the team playing Utah. Because there is no reason to cheer for Utah

USC (1-2) over Utah (3-0)

C. Cheer for BYU’s opponents. This helps SOS which helps our overall ranking.

Arizona (2-1) over #9 Washington (3-0)
UCLA (2-1) over #7 Stanford (2-0)
#8 Michigan State (2-0) over #11 Wisconsin (3-0)
Boise State (2-0) over Oregon State (1-1)
Cincinnati (2-1) over Miami OH (0-3)
Southern Utah (1-1) over Portland State (1-2)
UMass (1-2) over Mississippi State (1-2)
Utah State (2-1) over Air Force (2-0)

D. Cheer for teams playing teams ranked ahead of BYU. Cheer for unranked teams vs. ranked teams. If both teams are ranked ahead of BYU cheer for the higher ranked (Of course rules A-C trump rule D).

Kent St. over #1 Alabama
Marshall over #3 Louisville
Penn St. over #4 Michigan
Georgia Tech over #5 Clemson
Texas St. over #6 Houston
#10 Texas A&M over #17 Arkansas
#12 Georgia over #23 Ole Miss
South Florida over #13 Florida St.
#14 Tennessee over #19 Florida
Oklahoma St. over #16 Baylor
Auburn over #18 LSU
Northwestern over #20 Nebraska

E. Hold your nose and cheer for the MWC in nonconference play. The stronger the conference the stronger our bowl opponent will be (Unless it violates rules A-D).

Wyoming over Eastern Michigan
Nevada over Purdue
San Jose St. over Iowa St.
Colorado St. over Minnesota
Fresno St. over Tulsa
UNLV over Idaho

F. Cheer for teams playing potential programs that could get into the Big 12 over BYU (Unless it violates rules A-E)

Syracuse over UConn
Florida International over UCF

G. Cheer for our Opponents’ opponents unless they are playing our opponents. This helps our SOS in virtually every SOS calculation. The more connected a team is to our opponents the more you should cheer for them (unless it violates rules A-F). For example, Oregon St. is the most connected team to our opponents as they play 4 games against them (UCLA, Arizona, Utah, Boise St.). The number by the team indicates how connected they are. If the numbers are equal take the team who has lost or will most likely lose to our opponents.

Arizona St. (3) over Cal (2)
Colorado (3) over Oregon
Arkansas St (2) over Central Arkansas
South Carolina (2) over Kentucky
Akron over App St.
Ball St. over Florida Atlantic
Boston College over Wagner
Bowling Green over Memphis
Central Michigan over Virginia
East Carolina over Virginia Tech
Indiana over Wake Forest
Kansas St. over Missouri St.
Louisiana Lafayette over Tulane
Louisiana Tech over MTSU
Missouri over Delaware St.
Northern Illinois over Western Illinois
Notre Dame over Duke
Ohio over Gardner Webb
Old Dominion over UTSA
Rutgers over Iowa
South Alabama over Nicholls St.
TCU over SMU
Temple over Charlotte
Troy over New Mexico St.
Western Michigan over Georgia Southern

H. Cheer for the G5 team over the P5 team. Because it is fun (unless it violates rules A-G)

Western Kentucky over Vandy

I. It really doesn't matter:

Buffalo vs. Army
Pitt vs. North Carolina
North Texas vs. Rice
Southern Miss vs. UTEP

One correction. I don't think you want UMASS over Mississippi State since we play Mississippi State and want them to look at least respectable. UMASS stinks, so it really doesn't matter if Mississippi State beats them as it relates to our strength of schedule. But the other way around would actually hurt it quite a bit.

UMass is FBS. They are an FBS independent.

UMASS is FBS, and is an independent.

I would add Utah St. to Item B. The success of Utah St. hurts BYU's recruiting in Utah and hurts BYU's schedules because USU has become an *annual* home-away game. Need to get the BYU-USU series back to a 3-for-1.

And, our bowl opponent could be Air Force, so Air Force over Utah St.
