So, how does Taysom finish his BYU career?

Post by SpiffCoug »

Here is how Senior QBs performed over the final 9 games of their careers. John Beck had one of the (if not the) best career ending runs ever at BYU.

Here's is how the following QBs finished their careers. I chose nine games as Beck didn't play in game 4 of 2006 (Jason Beck did in a 38-0 win over Utah St). But something clicked in Beck those final 9 games. It was arguably the best finish to BYU QB's career.

Beck finished his career, by my totals, 22-17 (.564) in his 39 starts. But he was 9-0 in his final nine starts. Prior to that epic run, his career Passer Efficiency Rating (PER) was 134.26 and he was sacked 69 times in 30 games (2.3 per game). But over those final games his PER was 175.42 and he was sacked just 10 times.

Here is how I'd rank BYU's Senior QBs final stretch runs of their careers:

1. John Beck, 2006: 206 of 299 for 2,913 yards with 26 TDs 6 INTs for a 175.42 PER, .689 complete, 10 sacks, 36 rushes for 26 yards with 5 TDs. BYU scored 358 points in those games and won all nine.

2. Steve Young, 1983, 240 of 345 for 3,038 yards with 25 TDs 13 INTs for a 159.91 PER, .696 complete, 16 sacks, 76 rushes for 268 yards with 5 TDs. BYU scored 360 points and won all nine.

2. Marc Wilson, 1979, 213 of 347 for 3,234 yards with 26 TDs 11 INTs for a 158.06 PER, .614 complete. BYU scored 387 points and won eight games.

4. Steve Sarkisian, 1996, 163 of 244 for 2,363 yards with 21 TDs 7 INTs for a 170.82 PER, .668 complete, 17 sacks, 57 rushes for 7 yards with 1 TD. BYU scored 381 points and won all nine.

4. Ty Detmer, 1991: 202 of 313 for 3,274 yards with 30 TDs 8 INTs for a 178.92 PER, .645 complete, 19 sacks, 50 rushes for -49 yards with 5 TDs. BYU scored 354 points and won seven and tied two.

6. Max Hall, 2009, 187 of 276 for 2,375 yards with 25 TDs 6 INTs for a 165.58 PER, .678 complete, 14 sacks, 53 rushes for 69 yards with 1 TD. BYU scored 323 points and won eight of them.

7. Jim McMahon, 1981, 243 of 381 for 3,268 yards with 29 TDs 5 INTs for a 158.32 PER, .638 complete, 60 rushes for -125 yards with 0 TDs. BYU scored 354 points and won eight games.

8. Brandon Doman, 2001, 180 of 298 for 2,380 yards with 20 TDs 8 INTs for a 144.27 PER, .604 complete, 21 sacks, 106 rushes for 229 yard with 3 TDs. BYU scored 363 points and won seven games.

9. Christian Stewart, 2014, 200 of 350 for 2,637 yards with 25 TDs 10 INTs for a 138.29 PER, .571 complete, 22 sacks, 82 rushes for 163 yards with 4 TDs. BYU scored 318 points and won four games.

10. Robbie Bosco, 1985, 214 of 345 for 2,669 yards with 19 TDs 19 INTs for a 134.17 PER, .620 complete, 16 sackes, 50 rushes for -50 yards with 1 TD. BYU scored 291 points and won seven games.

11. Kevin Feterik, 1999, 188 of 320 for 2,565 yards with 17 TDs 11 INTs for a 136.74 PER, .588 complete, 33 sacks, 78 rushes for -96 yards with 1 TD. BYU scored 226 points and won six games.

12. Riley Nelson, 2012, 156 of 270 for 1,726 yards with 11 TDs 12 INTs for a 116.03 PER, .578 complete, 19 sackes, 73 rushes for 165 yards with 1 TD. BYU scored 217 points and won three games.

I also went through and assigned points for category ranking. For instance, if you had the most passing yards you got 12 points, the fewest 1. Those standing looked like this:

1. Steve Young, 125
1. John Beck, 125
3. Marc Wilson, 119
4. Ty Detmer, 118
4. Jim McMahon, 118
6. Max Hall, 115
7. Brandon Doman, 111
8. Christian Stewart, 104
9. Steve Sarkisian, 94
10. Robbie Bosco, 82
11. Kevin Feterik, 81
12. Riley Nelson, 75

So how does Taysom perform over his final nine games? Where will that stretch of games fall?

Well, hopefully he ends up closer to the top of the list because that would mean that BYU was doing well in those games.

If he had had a normal Bronco run defense instead of the Howell failure, BYU may have won every game he played in.
