Rooting Guide Week 8 2016

The goals for BYU are:

1. To achieve the highest ranking possible
2. To be bowl eligible and play the best bowl team possible
3. To win as many games as possible
4. To be better than Utah

If you want to see these goals accomplished here is your rooting guide:

A. Cheer for BYU. Duh.

BYU (4-3) over Boise St. (6-0)

B. Cheer for the team playing Utah. Because there is no reason to cheer for Utah

UCLA (3-4) over Utah (6-1)

C. Cheer for BYU’s opponents. This helps SOS which helps our overall ranking.

#12 West Virginia (5-0) over TCU (4-2)
Toledo (5-1) over Central Michigan (5-2)
Michigan State (2-4) over Maryland (4-2)
Mississippi State (2-4) over Kentucky (3-3)
Cincinnati (3-3) over East Carolina (2-4)
Southern Utah (3-3) over Weber State (4-2)
UMass (1-6) over South Carolina (2-4)
Utah State (2-4) over Fresno State (1-6)

D. Cheer for teams playing teams ranked ahead of BYU. Cheer for unranked teams vs. ranked teams. If both teams are ranked ahead of BYU cheer for the higher ranked (Of course rules A-C trump rule D).

#1 Alabama over #6 Texas A&M
Penn St. over #2 Ohio St.
Illinois over #3 Michigan
Oregon St. over #5 Washington
NC St. over #7 Louisville
Purdue over #8 Nebraska
Iowa over #10 Wisconsin
SMU over #11 Houston
Texas Tech over #16 Oklahoma
#17 Arkansas over #21 Auburn
Eastern Michigan over #20 Western Michigan
Virginia over #22 North Carolina
#23 Ole Miss over #25 LSU
Memphis over #24 Navy

E. Hold your nose and cheer for the MWC in nonconference play. Also cheer for the better team in conference matchups. The stronger the conference the stronger our bowl opponent will be (Unless it violates rules A-D).

San Diego St. (5-1) over SJSU (2-5)
Air Force (4-2) over Hawaii (3-4)
UNLV (3-4) over Colorado St (3-4)
New Mexico over Louisiana Monroe
Wyoming (4-2) over Nevada (3-4)

F. Root for the Big 12 to be turned upside down (Unless it violates rules A-E)

Kansas St. (3-3) over Texas (3-3)
Kansas (1-5) over Oklahoma St. (4-2)

G. Cheer for our Opponents’ opponents unless they are playing our opponents. This helps our SOS in virtually every SOS calculation. The more connected a team is to our opponents the more you should cheer for them (unless it violates rules A-F). For example, Oregon St. is the most connected team to our opponents as they play 4 games against them (UCLA, Arizona, Utah, Boise St.). The number by the team indicates how connected they are. If the numbers are equal take the team who has lost or will most likely lose to our opponents.

Cal (2) over Oregon
Colorado (3) over Stanford (2)
Arizona St. (3) over Washington St. (3)
Akron over Ball St.
Boston College over Syracuse
Bowling Green over Miami (OH)
Florida International over Louisiana Tech
Idaho over Appalachian St.
Louisiana Lafayette over Texas St.
Missouri over Middle Tennessee
Northern Illinois over Buffalo
Northwestern over Indiana
Ohio over Kent St.
Old Dominion over Western Kentucky
Rutgers over Minnesota
Temple over South Florida
Troy over South Alabama
Tulsa over Tulane
UConn over UCF

H. Cheer for the FCS team over the FBS team. Because it is fun (unless it violates rules A-G)

Prairie View over Rice
Tennessee Martin over Georgia St.
Tennessee St. over Vanderbilt

I. It really doesn't matter:

Charlotte vs. Marshall
Georgia Southern vs. New Mexico St.
Miami vs. Virginia Tech
North Texas vs. Army
UTEP vs. UTSA
