Time to start thinking about the future?

Post by Mingjai »

I'm curious about what the sentiment on the board is when it comes to planning for next season. Everyone knows what I'm talking about here--BYU is now 4-4 with 4 games coming up that BYU should be expected to win. Is it time to start giving Mangum in-game reps in the new offense to allow him some time to workshop some things before next season? If so, what's the best way to go about it? Start Tanner the last 4 games? Let him play the second halfs? Alternate series with Taysom? Only reserve Tanner for mop-up duty?

I was of the opinion that Tanner should have been getting meaningful reps throughout the season for a few reasons: 1) The offense rarely had a good rhythm going, particularly in the passing game, so giving Tanner a few series wouldn't disrupt that. 2) Tanner playing would give coaches game film of him in the new system so Tanner and the coaches would be able to make corrections and implement schemes in the off season. 3) Since BYU is committed to implementing a new system, it makes more sense long term to give Tanner chances to use in-system plays in games than it does to implement out-of-system plays (read option) specifically for Taysom.

So what does everyone think? Has anyone who thought Taysom should be getting all the reps reassessed that opinion given the current situation?

Ride it out with your senior QB in his senior year. Mangum will have 2 seasons to be the man.

Not fair to Taysom to put him out to pasture already. He could still have value for the draft. He missed some passes, but most were catchable, and some of the drops were dead-on accurate. He is an excellent game manager. Go back and watch the replays, and you'll see this. Hail-Marys are just that; there is no control over what happens on the descending end. Taysom's HM's were just as well placed as Tanners were last year. That one at the end of the half was in Lake's hands for a moment after the tip.

Since Tanner did not have to burn a year of eligibility, I don't think that the program owes him a share of starts. However, in terms of prep for next year, it is reasonable to give some fourth quarters to Mangum, for those easier games. I wouldn't recommend that, if BYU ends up in a tight game late, with Cincy or USU.

I think Tanner will get plenty of mop up time in the next few games, I'd stick through 3 quarters with TH for the most part.

Mop up.
BUT, what about little Detmer and Hoge? We've got three very capable QB's riding the bench. Something has to give. BYU has had great QB's who have sat. Royce Bybee was a 2nd string QB at BYU (I don't remember who he was behind ... Giff? just not sure). He probably would have started at most colleges or universities. Hardly played at BYU ... but was picked up in the CFL and had a good career. So, what do you do when there are 3 on the bench?

Give those two a series against SUU and see what they can do.

I don't know.....when you are QBs #3 and #4 there can't be much expectation of playing time outside of major injuries.

Detmer isn't a D1 qb.

Hoge could possibly grow into one. No playing time for either.

I think BYU could play Detmer and be competitive in the rest of the games. Doesn't matter who is QB from here on out. I'd rather see Taysom finish the year to avoid a freak injury to Mangum and it would be bush league to pull TH at this point.

It's gonna matter vs Cincy. Gunner Kiel is back.
