Re: Oregon
Almost as dumb as being down 20 and running an offense to the end of the shot clock and having the ball in austin/Mika/Sharp's hands 15 feet from the basket and having to heave up a desperation shot.hawkwing wrote:Yep.Mars wrote:Or when he sprints down the court, dribbles straight into 3 defenders, and then lobs up an ugly shot that barely gets near the basket, all about 4 seconds into the shot clock and without a single pass. That's dumb basketball.hawkwing wrote: I never got upset that Carlino tried to score, I got upset that he tried to score from 6 feet beyond the arc.
Carlino was doing what BYU basketball was built on this year. There is no half court game. Run and Gun (and I don't love it) is what BYU basketball is, and it creates plenty of bad shots when BYU gets down.

Re: Oregon
You might want to check box score for KC from the opening bell. Most consistent player on the team. Inconsistent Carlino did outscore him early, but BYU was usually getting 4-6 players in double figure until MC went cold and out of control and then Bartley and others got out of control.Gunk wrote:This.snoscythe wrote:In the second half of the Gonzaga game, and for the entire Oregon game, BYU needed points, needed a lot of them, and needed them in a hurry.
I don't understand why BYU fans are upset that Carlino tried to do that. Who did they expect to try and step up and get us back in the Gonzaga game and replace KC's scoring against Oregon? Frank Bartley?
And it's been this way almost the entire season. At the beginning of the season, who other than Haws was going to score the ball? Austin? Nope. Mika? Good for a few. KC? Took him a bit to get his legs and scoring back. So right from the get go Haws and MC were relied on to score the ball.
KC got hot and Winder got hoy at the end of the season, minus the last two games. But in all seriousness, we played 3 on 5 when on offense against Oregon.
We desperately need a 2 that can knick down 3s and stretch the defense and 4 or 5 that can keep defenses honest in the middle.
We didn't really have either of those pieces this year.

If MC had stayed in control like he ended the NIT and started this season - BYU would have won 5 more games - minimum

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

My problem with Carlino is that he did the same thing down 3 as he did down 20. No awareness.BroncoBot wrote: Almost as dumb as being down 20 and running an offense to the end of the shot clock and having the ball in austin/Mika/Sharp's hands 15 feet from the basket and having to heave up a desperation shot.

Re: Oregon
Another thing to consider here is I don't think anyone would be mad at Carlino if he didn't show he had the talent and ability to be something special. It's just he consistently took himself out of opportunities to really excel.

He has all the physical tools or at least enough. He needs his mental game fixed.

Re: Oregon
I actually get that some players are streaky. When Carlino is on fire it's amazing. When he's not, it's well amazing in a different way. Playing within one's self is a talent and MC has not acquired it yet.Cougs_Rule wrote:Yep.Mars wrote:My problem with Carlino is that he did the same thing down 3 as he did down 20. I get bugged because people act like Carlino is the main problem, when he is normally far from it.
When Brayden posts Kalani be like:

Nevermind he'll go down 2nd all time in assists and quite possibly in the Top 15 all time in scoring. Ya, what a horrible player...

Re: Oregon
On the Gonzaga forums, they openly pray that Matt Carlino will play for BYU forever, to keep our Cougars from ever winning a conference championship. It's all BYU fans' fault though, not MC's.Gunk wrote: MC is the whipping boy for fans' frustrations.
