Re: Carlino to Transfer
I was in person for Carlino's debut against Baylor. I have no doubt that many fans that day thought he was the 2nd coming of Jimmer and I have no doubt that many of those same fans think Carlino failed on some level and that BYU will now be better moving forward. I never got the impression that Carlino envisioned himself as the 2nd coming of Jimmer and I don't think I will see in my lifetime another BYU player have a Jimmermania-like experience, though I hope to be proven wrong on that one. I think Carlino wants to be a starting PG, is realistic to see that he won't supplant KC in that role next year, saw an open door to be immediately eligible, and will now take his services elsewhere. I am one fan who enjoyed how hard he competed, his desire to win, and his contributions to the program's recent success. I wish him nothing but the best going forward and hope that Coach Rose can put the pieces together to overcome the loss of Carlino, which I think he will. Go Cougars!

Re: Carlino to Transfer
Carlino had a twitter account, that he would regularly use to promote BYU basketball (even while not officially on the team the year he had to sit out).Gunk wrote:You don't think MC was aware of all the criticism he got as a player?hawkwing wrote:I can't see any possible way that unrealistic expectations from fans could cause Carlino to leave the program. It wasn't unrealistic expectations from fans that got Carlino benched, nor is it what kept him as the 6th man.
He shut that down this year, when he started getting a lot of hate.

First. Of course the fact that all teams have unrealistic fans does not make it right. I hate the player bashing. But if any player transfers because of unrealistic fans - that would be foolish. That was my point.BroncoBot wrote:And that always makes it right.Cougarbib wrote:Name the team without unrealistic fans.

I agree with Gunk, Carlino never said he was going to be the next jimmer, never said he was going to score x amounts of points. And was possibly the most exciting player to watch since Jimmer.
And cougarbib, Carlino's shooting percentage goes up, does it really matter if he's taking bad shots? A lot of Haw's shots could be considered "bad". He's often not fast enough to shake a good defender and will still take shots with a hand in his face as well as twisting and moving laterally while shooting. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
Second. Carlino misses almost every bad shot but is actually decent on the appropriate shots. All he needs to do is quit taking the bad shots and his shooting is fine. But you have a math error. Every 10% bad shot you pass up does not net zero points. It gives a 50% shooter a chance to shoot a good shot. 50% beats 10% every time.
If Carlino shoots a similar FG, 3PT, and FT% with his next team, like at UCLA and BYU, he soon will not be the starting point guard.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

Re: Carlino to Transfer
If Carlino's next team has a post player and an outside shooter that can score he may not need to take as many shots.

Re: Carlino to Transfer
Maybe, just maybe, he's not a Mormon, was on a team that needed someone to leave due to over committing on scholarships, and he was benched. He's probably mature enough to realize that even though he didn't like fan criticism that it was going to be no different on any other team with another fan base. Maybe he was bored. Someone was going to have to “quit” on the team this year. If he left he could play somewhere else due to being a graduate student where someone else couldn’t do that. (I just wish it wasn’t him)
At least we’re not losing an underclassman NBA point guard like many other teams will this year.

I had just assumed Carlino was LDS. Even if not, his benching was nothing to do with that.Stirfry wrote:Maybe, just maybe, he's not a Mormon, was on a team that needed someone to leave due to over committing on scholarships, and he was benched. Re: Carlino to Transfer
Carlino did not NEED to take those shots. He was benched because he would not stop taking wild shots early in the shot clock. He had 2 all WCC players, one all WCC freshman team player, himself as WCC honorable mention to work with plus Winder who had decent offensive skills. Other than Gonzaga, no WCC team had more weapons.Gunk wrote:If Carlino's next team has a post player and an outside shooter that can score he may not need to take as many shots.

And, yet, BYU played few teams this year where the opposing PGA shot as low a % for the season as MC. How many guys, other than Johnny D, for example, did San Diego have to work with? Other than elite teams, teams have liabilities.

Him not being a Mormon is a reason he's less prone to love BYU not reason why he was benched. He was bencehd to get him to calm down but was still given starters minutes. Those were reasons why he might be deciding to move on not implications that he was benched because of those reasons.
Hopefully he isn't pulling a Carlos Boozer and cares more about be a starter than a finisher.
I'm a starter. Period.- Booz

Re: Carlino to Transfer
I'm sad to see Carlino go. He has been fun to watch and has been an asset to our team. I don't think he realizes that he had control of his destiny here at BYU. If he would have listened to the coaches and controlled his game, he would have been starting and likely been all-WCC 1st team. We needed him this year, but he didn't tighten up those aspects of his game that would have brought himself and the team greater success. The Carlino and haws combo should have been a dominating duo, but fell short. Had Carlino lived up to coaches expectations, he would have had an amazing year and the thought of a transfer wouldn't have crossed his mind.
