Austin to get medical redshirt?
With the reports that Nate Austin might not be able to make it back this year, what are the chances of him receiving a medical redshirt? As I understand it, you have to have played in less than 30% of the games, and none after the half way point of the season. Nate Austin played in 10 games (less than a minute in the Utah game, but still "played"), we have 31 games on the schedule, so that would be 32.3%, so we would need 3 extra games to get below 30% (10/34 = 29.4%). How strict is the 30%? Is he likely to get the redshirt year?

I'd be surprised if he gets it, but stranger things have happened. If he does, it throws a bit of a wrench into scholarships next year too.

Very, and No.kjjson wrote:How strict is the 30%? Is he likely to get the redshirt year?
The 30% requirement is that you cannot play in more than 30% of your teams "scheduled games". The NCAA/NIT don't count as they are not "scheduled" games, and only 2 of the WCC games count as "scheduled," because that's all you're guaranteed in a double-elimination tournament. That's going to get him to 33 games possible games, 10 in which he played, for 30.3% of games played. BYU will have to petition for an exception to get another game to count, which is no likely at all when you are talking about a kid who will be 25 years old next season.

Ah well. I guess that means we need the younger guys to step up.

Also, they really tend not to give out medical redshirts if the player has already redshirted. A major season ending surgery/injury is usually what has to occur to be able to petition and have a good case for getting an extra year.

Hence, the move away from granting every player a red-shirt up front. Both football and basketball are trying to hold not use red-shirts.saywhat wrote:Also, they really tend not to give out medical redshirts if the player has already redshirted.
