You are all crazy re: staying in the WCC
BYU needs to join a conference as soon as possible, even the MWC, and get out of this poor excuse for a conference with its poor officiating. These games are some of the poorest excuses for officiating I have witnessed in my entire adult life.
I'm not saying it is anti-BYU, it swings both ways. But, it is hard to play in a league that has officials that don't understand what a travel is. They might as well just put a large wheel of fortune type wheel next to each court and just go to the refs after each play and spin it.
BYU didn't deserve to win that game against Portland (because for some reason we are starting a small forward that can't hit a jumpshot and is slow and has average handles at point guard), but I would like to at least win or lose fairly.
Screw this conference. These refs are absolutely trash.

These aren't WCC refs. They're part of a group of refs that officiate for several different conferences.
The refs didn't make KC go 3-17.

Uh, they are never (insert conference here) refs. You aren't familiar with how refs are selected in college basketball, are you? (Not being mean here, just asking...)SpiffCoug wrote:These aren't WCC refs. They're part of a group of refs that officiate for several different conferences.

NCAA bball Refs are independent contractors that get their schedules made in the offseason. They go to the highest bidder (obviously), so on nights where there are a lot of games, like saturday, there is a lot of competition. The WCC pays absolutely garbage for refs because they have a bunch of high school gyms as a conference and no tv deal to speak of, so you can imagine that we are FAR FAR FAR down anyone's list to come and ref on a busy friday or saturday night.
That is why the refs suck, because we are getting refs that no one else wanted.

ugg....zzzzzzz
glad I didn't watch this one. 5 turnovers for kc? byu had an awful shooting%. Portland looks like they should have won by more based on the box score.
well, that about ensures at least 2nd place. this byu team is a Rollercoaster which means they'll lose a few more before the season is over. possibly as early as next week.
silver lining - I actually think this particular team could win the wcc tournament if they get a few things figured out.

That's how it worked until this season. Coach Rose spoke on Tuesday at the Cougar Club lunch about the new alliance where the PAC-12, WCC, MW, WAC, and Big West share officials and rotate them. Rose was of the opinion on Tuesday that the officiating this season under the new program has been much more consistent.Brayden Green wrote:Uh, they are never (insert conference here) refs. Bottom line is, we'd have the same officials if we joined the PAC12 tomorrow.

I was also at this Cougar Club luncheon and can confirm that Rose explained the new referee alliance that the Western conferences have joined up for, which as Sno said, he feels has been a marked improvement.snoscythe wrote:That's how it worked until this season. Hmmm. Interesting. Thanks for the information.
They might want to teach the new reffing crews what a travel is, and what a carry is, because the last few games have been textbook examples of blatant missed calls.

Regardless of the new reffing coalition, the refs still suck! Inconsistency still rules the day.

Re: You are all crazy re: staying in the WCC
To be clear, Rose's comments were that officiating on the whole has improved this season from past seasons, but he also made it clear that he wasn't pleased with the calls last Saturday against San Francisco, and I doubt he was pleased with how the Portland game was called.Brayden Green wrote:Hmmm. His impression that the refs are better this season does not mean he thinks every game is called right.

I don't know why people are thinking that pairing up with the MWC and the Pac-12 ref crews is going to make the refereeing any better. It's like pairing your Hitler boss up with Voldemort and Emperor Palpatine in the hope that they'll make him less evil.
