RPI is Out

Post by byufan4ever »

BYU SN mentioned yesterday that starting in the 2018-19 season that RPI will no longer be used in the NCAA tournament selection committee. Instead they will look at:

Home wins vs top 30 (BYU had zero last season)
Neutral site wins vs top 50 (BYU had zero)
Road wins vs top 75 (BYU had one - Gonzaga)

And to define top 30/50/75 they are looking at some other sort of composite ranking besides RPI. Are you guys happy or sad to say RIP to RPI?

Does this skew the entire process towards the P5 conferences?

This sounds like some tea-leaf process they can use to basically pick who they want. The committee was starting to feel some heat from excluding teams that based on RPI should have been in the tournament and including teams that shouldn't. This sounds like a way to fix "the problem," not the problem of getting selections wrong but " the problem" of their selections getting criticized.

Could this potentially push some schools to play in the Marriott center since a win there would most likely be a pretty good resume builder with the new format?

Only if we're in the top 75...

Will be interesting to see how they rank the teams.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket ... system-rpi

We now know what the NCAA is replacing RPI with: NET or NCAA Evaluation Tool.
NET will take into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, offensive and defensive efficiency and the quality of wins and losses.

The system won't give more weight to games late in the season, instead omitting game date and order from the data. It also caps the winning margin at 10 points to discourage teams from running up the score.

The quadrant system used on last season's NCAA tournament team sheets is still in place, with NET replacing RPI as the sorting tool. Team sheets will also still include other metrics, including ESPN's BPI and Strength of Record, as well as those from Kevin Pauga, Ken Pomeroy and Jeff Sagarin

I'm always leery of an undefined "strength of schedule" metric.
