This is interesting. I've studied the Islamic faith quite a bit, and written several papers on it. To stretch and claim that Mormons are closer to Muslims than Christianity is severe "pretzel logic" syndrome. Some real mental gymnastics are occurring to come up with that thesis.

Not even close.
There are some similarities between the founding of Islam and Mormonism (visiting angels, divine scripture, etc.) but isn't that really how most religions start?

Someone has a visitation or achieves enlightenment and then a book about that it is produced.
One could claim any faith is similar to any other faith if the standard is set is general, universal experiences. Such as enlightenment, spiritual experiences, life changing attitudes and commitments, etc. Nearly all faiths have some experience with a being that could be defined as an angel, a god, a manifestation, a messenger, etc.

The point is - you have to drill deeper and look beyond the superficial, surface items that will be shared by nearly every faith. Atheists claim "All" religious folks are the same - looney. They claim people of faith are delusional because they are given to day dreaming, emotional hot flashes, and illogical tangents based on fairy tails.

And so it goes.

Here are a couple of ways Mormons are closer to Muslims than run-of-the-mill Christianity

1) daily prayer
2) strong families
3) no alcohol allowed
4) high standards of chastity
5) emphasis on education
6) large, beautiful buildings of worship
7) song "is a prayer unto me"
8 ) look at western debauchery in disgust and awe at the same time
9) Very conservative dress code

Things Muslims do better than we do
1) hospitality, and it's not even close
2) separation of government and nations. (i.e. love americans, hate america)
3) pray more often
4) scripture memorization
5) something to be said for arranged marriages also.
6) Polygamy

Wow. Talk about painting with broad strokes on a limited sample set.

Muslim "hospitality" is better than Christian "hospitality"? Are you serious?

Like honor killing their children, car bombing market places, blowing up buses full of tourists, ramming planes into buildings and killing thousands of innocent people, declaring over and over that that all Jews will be wiped from the face of the earth - complete and total genocide of all Jews. That kind of hospitality?

There is no comparison - except for the superficial.

I'm guessing that those actions are not representative of your typical Muslim. Kinda like how not all Christians bomb abortion clinics. Just bib.

What is the typical Muslim? What percentage of Muslims are Jihadists? Or, at a min, sympathetic and supportive of the radical Jihadist movement? No one knows.

There are entire Muslim based countries committed to the genocide of Israel. Committed to killing every man, woman and child because of their ethnicity and faith.

Are there any Christian based countries committed to the genocide of anyone because of their faith or ethnicity?

Here's a nice little story -

"Islamists: Two stoned to death for committing adultery in Mali"

From Katarina Hoije, For CNN
August 2, 2012

Bamako, Mali (CNN) -- Islamists in control of northern Mali said they forced a man and a woman into two holes and stoned them to death for committing adultery in the lawless region.

Witnesses watched quietly as Islamists executed the two by pelting them with rocks in the remote Aguelhok town, according to a local resident.

"I don't know how many rocks they threw or for how long it went on before they were both dead," said Haman Maiga, a resident of Aguelhok who witnessed the stoning. "No one dared to try and stop the Islamists."

The woman had two small children, a boy and a girl, according to Maiga.

i'm curious as to whether you've met any Muslims in their homes or if your rant is based solely off of western media coverage of war zones?
