Compare and Contrast
Star Power
Start with QB, TEs, RB, FB, WR, OL in that order.

QB - winningest ever Vs injury prone, fiesty, weaker arm guy who can run - advantage Max Hall
TE - seems like 2009 still had Pitta and George IIRC vs who knows what 2012 has
FB - Tonga or whomever it was that year Vs Potential
RB - Harvey Unga va a guy that hopes to be a mini version of Unga
WR- Was Collie still there? No. 2012 does match up or exceed.
OL - Serviceable Vs Who knows what - possibly about even at best
Easier vs Tougher schedule re # times underdog on the road

Hopefully 2012 brings some pleasant surprises.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

I think Collie was gone. But the focus was on Pitta, Unga and George...Advantage definitely 2009 on Offense.
But what of Defense? Just eyeball-ing, guessing, would say this D is likely better than 2009. So, a wash? Even-Stephen?

Someone with access to a computer for research or that has a better memory than me could compare the defenses position by position. I think 2009 DL wins, 2012 LB wins, 2012 DB wins. Overall 2012 D wins.

ST - memory fades - but 2012 seems to have more kicking questions.

I think the D makes up for only part of the O gap.

And - maybe the O will have some surprises.

And, it is not clear, yet, whether the new coaches are better than the old ones.

Maybe some pleasant surprises there in year 2.

BYU's 2012 defense will be head and shoulders better than it was in 09. Even if our Dline(and it wasn't much better if at all) was better in 09, the linebackers and secondary will be much better this year and the d will be better coached this year as well.

I think the offense in 09 had less question marks going into the season but this years offense has potential to be very good. We have better overall recievers than we had then because in 09 we had pitta at TE but our recieving group wasn't nearly as talented as we have this year. I have said it before, this offense averages 30 pts per game (and IMO that is very attainable with the talent we have even if Riley goes down and Lark has to take over) we will have a very special year because our defense is going to be VERY good this year.

By the way Collie left after the 08 season. 09 would have been his sr year but he left early much to Mars chagrin.

I would put the 2009 safety combo of Johnson/Rich up against any in maybe BYU's entire program history but certainly of the Crowton/Mendenhall eras. Overall the 2012 DBs should be better but man, watching Scotty and Andrew captain the defense in '09 was pretty sweet. Without question, this could be our best LB corps ever. Wouldn't it have been nice if JP could have gotten a medical redshirt and played one more year? Scary!

2012 Depth Chart from http://www.ksl.com/?sid=21663468&nid=49 ... ugar-day-9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Personally I'd take the 2012 team for offense, defense and special teams, though there are some positions I would take the 2009 players over the current players they are fewer than the ones I prefer current players.

ON that list the only players I would trade are on offense and IMO there wouldn't be many of them. IMO only QB TE (both of them). On defense I might consider trading for Rich but IMO Sorenson is going to make everyone forget about Rich this year. He was pretty good last year coming right off of a mission having not played that position before.

If I'm remembering right, in 2009, our FB wasn't Kariya, it was Manase Tonga. I don't think any FB we have this year will be as good as Tonga.
