Re: Is it Time for BYU to Join A Conference?
I'd like to see what we could do as an independent.
Couple of coaching changes and I feel we could be right up there.
Regardless if whether we stay independent or try for the Big 12 we're going to need to up our game. Right now, other than our fan base we're not a very attractive option.

The bigger conferences are trying to consolidate as much money as they can to themselves - hence kicking the Big East out of the club. Don't be surprised if they find a way to get the club down to four conferences.
Sorry Big XII, but they're going to close you up by only stealing the teams they want (Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Kansas St, TCU, West Virginia) and add them to the PAC12, B1G, SEC & ACC.

BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)
(8.4xYDS)+(330xTD)+(100xCOM)-(200xINT)

Considering the fact that the SEC and Big XII just signed a massive bowl alignment agreement, I;d say that the Big XII is safe for a very long time. I think it will be 5 power conferences for at least the next 10-12 years, or longer. Too mnay teams to get down to 4-16 team leagues. Some power teams would still be left out, so it will be 5.

I agree that BYU needs to improve in recruiting, coaching, facilities, etc. But to say we're not an attractive option is silly. Is it because we are 6-4 right now? Even with the 6-4 record, we beat an ACC team in the South and played Notre Dame tough in South Bend. We also have a very good shot at 9 wins this year.Gunk wrote:Regardless if whether we stay independent or try for the Big 12 we're going to need to up our game. May be the Big 12 is waiting to make sure that Jabari signs with BYU but leaves for a mission right away, so that he will play in the Big 12 for a year for the 2015-16 season.

With the announcement of the big east getting a chance for an auto bcs game if the finish higher than the other conferences how can people say they still do not want it? Indy is worse of than the sun belt with the new system. The bcs is the ultimate goal and Indy gets shut out with the new system, bottom line is if you have any goals to a bcs you better join the big east.

This may be an aside but I'd argue a national championship is the "ultimate goal." When you think about it, the other BCS bowls are relatively meaningless. Sure, there's more money but so what? The question is, what best gets us into that 4 team playoff or whatever it will be?bcsbuster wrote:With the announcement of the big east getting a chance for an auto bcs game if the finish higher than the other conferences how can people say they still do not want it? The road to the top-4 for BYU is to go undefeated. It would probably be easier for BYU to go undefeated in the Big East versus an independent schedule. Even then, it would need to be against a good schedule. Louisville was undefeated until this weekend and was barely cracking the top 10 with their Big East schedule. They might have cracked the top 4, but not likely. The "new-look" Big East might actually provide a little more strength to the schedule. BYU would likely be placed in the Big East's "Blue Division" as follows:KingCoug wrote:This may be an aside but I'd argue a national championship is the "ultimate goal." Boise State
Cincinnati
Houston
Rutgers
Temple
UCF
Memphis would likely be the yearly cross-division "rival". (Easy win and not bad if it gets us some bball games against Memphis....)
That's a decent, but manageable schedule. Add in a marquee non-conference game against Notre Dame or Big Ten school and frequent games against Hawaii and Utah State. BYU would be in a decent position to finish in the top 4 if it runs the table. Probably easier than via the independence route.

Name the last ranked opponent BYU beat and when.YNot wrote:I agree that BYU needs to improve in recruiting, coaching, facilities, etc. But to say we're not an attractive option is silly. Best wins for BYU in the last two seasons were against USU. Think about that for a second.
Playing ND close or almost beating BSU doesn't count. You don't get any swagger points for losing. Fans can feel better about themselves over playing an opponent "close," but no one else cares. We haven't beaten anyone as of late.
All that BYU has going for it at this point is the size of our fan base and even that is slipping. Given how many concessions we ask for and our lackluster performance as of late (haven't even cracked the BCS compared to BSU, Utah, TCU and even Hawaii) then adding BYU may be more of a hassle if you're the Big 12.

Even then I think a 1-loss SEC, Big 12, Big 10, and PAC 12 team would get in before we would. The Big East will continue to be considered BCS-lite.YNot wrote:The road to the top-4 for BYU is to go undefeated.
