David Locke podcast on BYU, Bronco, and the Vegas Bowl.

I don't know how many of you listen to/like David Locke, but this podcast from today sums up how I feel (and his take on the bigger impact the Pac 12 has on BYU, is something I've been saying for awhile).
Is he maybe a little strong in saying BYU might not be a good job? Probably, but you have to admit it will take a special person to keep the program at this level or potentially grow it.
This is a pivotal time for BYU, and one thing that I've learned very recently in life is that you can do everything 100% right...and it still doesn't matter.

One thing Locke was saying on the radio today is that BYU limits it's pool of coaches, not only by only hiring LDS coaches (which he seemed to understand), but by the money it's willing to spend.
He definitely has a point with the money. The Church/University could easily afford to pay at least twice what they are now. Sometimes you really get what you pay for.

Re: David Locke podcast on BYU, Bronco, and the Vegas Bowl.
The Church has plenty of cash, a lot of it from non-tithing ventures. It isn't a matter of having the money or the sanctity of the money. Tithing isn't used to pay coaches anyways. It's a matter of whether they want to spend it on coaching.
The Church has a history of paying employees across all disciplines (BYU professors, Church accountants, lawyers, etc.) below what they are worth. They will tell you salaries are at "competitive rates," which is code for "we looked at the national average and are paying you on the low end of the average but still within the average...did we mention we're a non-profit." Meanwhile, they will expect results and effort typical of tier 1 institutions and businesses.
And, they can. There are plenty of people that consider it an honor to work for the Church. And, there are plenty of professionals that want to live in Utah that will accept "competitive rates."
When it comes to football though, the model doesn't work. You get what you pay for to a degree. If BYU is serious about football as a missionary tool then the bigger stage it plays on the bigger the influence. I suspect that notion isn't lost on the BoT, they just don't want to pay for it yet. So, we're destined to be a stepping stone, not a stopping point for talented coaches. Should we ever make the playoffs, I guarantee you we will be shopping for a new coach shortly thereafter.

The Church doesn't claim or receive non-profit status on its business ventures and other for-profit endeavors.

I'm just a regular, everyday normal guy,
I can't afford a car, I use public transportation,
I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,
sometimes a newspaper, sometimes a book,
the money I save, this stuff is off the hook,

BYU will be changing coaches much more often, whether they are good or bad. It will be a stepping stone jobs for coaches going forward.

The athletic department turns a profit due to ESPN. They can spend more on coaches if they get a return on the investment. I think they would rather spend it on facilities and recruiting though.

Can anyone explain why Byu doesn't keep the money from concessions on campus? Isn't that a revenue source that could help fund coaches salaries?
