No Kicker?

Post by SpiffCoug »

Anyone else see/hear the report that we may not have a kicker yet? That a coach (Detmer?) said that it's possible that the kicker may not even be in school yet.

Is it possible that BYU is in such a poor position with the kicking game that we may have to wait until school starts in two weeks to finally have our best kicker available?

Walk on placekicker. Other kickers are not at camp yet.

The kickers on the roster include:
Jonny Linehan - he is the #1 punter and only kicker on scholarship
Rhett Almond - Sophomore. Appeared in 9 games last year as a holder and had 1 punt for 48 yards against UCLA.
James Baird - recently returned missionary - #1 on kicker chart after spring.
Jake Oldroyd - freshman from Texas who will compete for the job this fall.

Kicker Corey Edwards is a RS sophomore who was on scholarship but is not listed on the current 105-man roster and is believed to have had his scholarship pulled. Not sure if he will be back with the team.
Kicker Andrew Mikkelsen (SO) has re-appeared as a walk-on but is not listed on the 105-man roster. He was a redshirt at Oregon State in 2012 pre-mission and then was on the BYU roster in 2014 where he kicked in 11 games. Not sure why he dropped off last year's roster.

Hopefully they stop punting entirely and try an onside kick every chance they get.

Update on the kickers/punters in camp:
http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4275083-15 ... leg?page=1
Basically they still don't know who the kicker will be in camp.
There is not a kicker in camp who has attempted a PAT or field goal in a college football game.
• Freshman James Baird, a 5-foot-7, 171-pound walk-on returned missionary from Northridge High in Layton, is probably the front-runner for PAT duties, and perhaps short field goals.
• Sophomore Rhett Almond, the 6-foot-4 backup punter to Jonny Linehan, can also do some placekicking, and has reportedly been the most accurate long field goal kicker in camp.
• Redshirt sophomore Corey Edwards (former coach LaVell Edwards' grand-nephew) kicked off seven times last year and will likely battle Almond for kickoff duties this fall. Edwards joined the team last week, but hasn't quite lived up to the billing that accompanied him out of Hurricane High in 2011.
• True freshman Jake Oldroyd, a 6-1, 170-pound walk-on from Southlake, Texas. Oldroyd was a perfect 60 for 60 on PATs and 8 for 8 on field-goal attempts in his two seasons at Carroll High School.

So we have a right to be scared for the kicking game. Hopefully the guys on the roster work out okay and it is nerves for nothing.

I also looked at the pipeline to see if any kicking relief is coming in for 2017 and there is a current missionary Cade Thompson out of Arizona who was not offered a scholarship but plans to attend BYU. He might try out for the team as a walk-on but reportedly is also interested in playing Lacrosse at BYU.

There is a class of 2017 commitment in Ryan Rehkow from Washington state but it appears he has mission plans before going to school.

That means there wouldn't be significant relief until 2018 when the highly touted Skyler Southam out of Heber City returns from his mission. So here's to hoping one of the current guys can be a contributor.
