Jaren Hall RS or not?

Post by EM_Puma »

Well, this is the 4th game, and my understanding is that a team can play a player in a total of 4 games without pulling their red shirt year. So is this the last we'll see of Jaren Hall this season?

Who else might be playing their last game this season because of red shirt rules?

Has Jaren Hall appeared in all 3 games so far? I think it's pretty stupid to put him in for just one play. I would rather him get a full quarter+ in our four "easy" games than one meaningless snap on 4 other games.

He's in the stats for the Puketah and USC games. Did he not play any downs in the Tennessee game? I thought he had, but he has zero stats noted, but that doesn't mean he didn't play.

I don't know, besides gadget plays, what you would have him do if he's not QBing.

His red shirt was last year. He will play more this year.

I guess I was saying that IF he still had a redshirt available and he could only appear in 4 games, I would rather use all 4 on games where he is going to get the most snaps per game. It would seem silly to me to burn a redshirt on someone playing a total of 4 snaps for the season.

You are correct. 2018 was a red shirt year already. So we've got him in the mix for the whole year. That's great.

I still hope he'll be happy to backup Wilson for this year and next. I don't see Wilson leaving until his junior year unless this year suddenly gets crazy, which would be great that it did. So many QB's just have a challenge being a backup when they believe themselves as good or better than the starter.

How could his RS have been last year when he just barely got home in May 2019?

He was home before May because he was the starting qb in spring ball.

byucougars.com lists him as a Redshirt Freshman, having only played in two games in the 2018 season.

Returned from his mission May 11, 2018.

Redshirted in 2018 with 2 appearances:
@ Boise State - 1 rush for -2 yards
@ UMass - 3 rushes for 6 yards (long was 2 yards)

He completed his first pass to Zach Wilson for 19 yards in his only career attempt so far. He has 3 rushing attempts this year for -8 yards (5 yards was the longest). Of course that bobbled snap against Utah is what really killed his rushing stats.

I fully expect him to get some more time as the schedule lightens up later in the season. Behind Wilson there isn't much recent experience for the QBs:
Joe Critchlow
2017: 6 games 55/101 passing for 642 yards 3 TDs, 4 INTs (all 4 INTs against UMass in that horrible loss)

Jaren Hall
2018/2019: 4 games 1/1 passing for 19 yards 0 TDs, 0 INTs
