Re: Death Penalty for Penn State!
Again, I haven't read the NCAA rulebook, but I find it hard to believe that covering up major crimes for the benefit of the football team falls within what's considered "acceptable" by the NCAA.Cougarfan87 wrote:There's a huge difference. All the teams you mentioned had NCAA violations. Penn State did not. I do understand that there is an issue with hurting current teams for past violations, but the point here is that these were not NCAA violations. Hence, the NCAA should stay out of it.Schmoe wrote:The same argument you're making here could have been made at SMU, USC, etc.Cougarfan87 wrote:I see the pitch fork crew is out in force.
The only ones who deserve punishment are the wrongdoers. I understand the argument that the football team was a benefactor of the coverup, but they obviously aren't benefitting much now. Can you imagine the banners when Penn State comes rolling into town to play football? "Hey Penn State--Keep your tickle montsers to yourself." The football team is more than paying for whatever benefit the coverup gave them. I imagine this will hurt recruiting for some time.
What wrongful activities did the current football team engage in with respect to this Sandusky tragedy? None.
I'm just a regular, everyday normal guy,
I can't afford a car, I use public transportation,
I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,
sometimes a newspaper, sometimes a book,
the money I save, this stuff is off the hook,

Here is the solution - cut off Sandusky's offending parts and attach an extra one to the forehead of any living people who had a shortage of cajones in dealing with what they knew. Permanently attach these conversation pieces. Do not waste one on the statue. Somebody will take care of the statue at some point.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

Re: Death Penalty for Penn State!
Okay, after reading Sally Jenkin's article in the Washington Post, I would concede that the Penn State football program needs to be penalized for their head coach supposedly allowing the sexual abuse of young boys for such a long period of time and not stopping it when he could for fear of the bad exposure to his program. I don't know if I would go with the death penalty being applied, but there needs to be sanctions and the statue HAS to come down.

They could move the Paterno statue to the library, to remind people to keep quiet.hawkwing wrote:Add a crying child in the distance with Paterno's upturned face patently ignoring it.Mars wrote:Why? It's a perpetual reminder of their shame.EM_Puma wrote: The statue HAS to come down.

Re: Death Penalty for Penn State!
Lack of institutional control is a catch all phrase that can be used to cover almost anything. Not to mention that I'm sure there is a way that this could be construed into a recruiting violation.
If there is no NCAA by-law that states covering up a felony is a violation of NCAA policy, I think one should be demanded. Call it the Sandusky law.

Re: Death Penalty for Penn State!
Lack of institutional control is very broad, but it is limited to the NCAA bylaws and policies--it doesn't apply to extra-NCAA regulations. The lack of control here relates to criminal activity, not NCAA violations, so in the NCAA-sense there is no institutional control implicated.stuckinbig10country wrote:Lack of institutional control is a catch all phrase that can be used to cover almost anything. I don't think the NCAA will, nor should it, touch this. Essentially the argument is "they did something really bad and criminal, so they should get the death penalty." Unfortunately, if the NCAA steps in here by stretching their jurisdiction far beyond anything ever contemplated, the NCAA then will have carte blanche to get involved with any criminal activity touching the athletic programs it oversees---like rape gate, and balloon gate.
I understand people are pissed and want to punish someone, but (a) you are punishing the wrong people, and (b) the NCAA has no authority to do this, and you don't want them to take on that authority. Bad precedent makes for bad law.
