Libertarians and liberals are basically on opposite ends of the spectrum. Libertarians believe in the smallest amount of government possible, while modern liberals believe that the government should control and be in charge of as much as possible (see: Marxism, Socialism, Communism. see also: socioeconomic philosophies cooked up by men without any true life experience or high IQs that have failed every time they've been tried).

There are, however, a few places where liberals and libertarians intersect, like legalization of Marijuana.

I no longer see the political world as a spectrum or continuum. To me it's more like the Olympic rings: chunks of overlap between two or more ideologies.

Liberals and libertarians would allow for drug use. Liberals would regulate and tax it heavily, while libertarians would (generally) not.

Liberals and conservatives want limited government, believing markets solve problems if people are left to their own self interest. Except that conservatives want more gov't regulation in areas where the see markets for what they consider morally repugnant.

This is a very light discussion, I'm still working on my dissertation
