New Coach Mini-Rant
I have read and heard maybe a few dozen times the "I don't want Ken N. here at BYU because we are not an option school" argument (I'm using the word argument here in its most loose form).
Use your brains.
Ken N would not run the option at any other school in the entire nation, except at one of the service academies. Ken N oversees the option there because that is the only chance that Navy has of winning a game. Same with Air Force. They dont get 6 foot 7, 320 pound offensive lineman that sign up for service at Navy, Army, Air Force. The only *option* (pun intended) is for undersized athletic "offensive lineman" to dive at people's knees.
We get those types of athletes. He wouldn't run the option.

Re: New Coach Mini-Rant
I don't think he would bring the option to BYU were he hired as well. With that being said, he is from the Paul Johnson (GA Tech) coaching tree, and has been at Navy how long? 20 years? If he were to come, he better be pretty comfortable ceding control of the offense to the O-Coordinator.Brayden Green wrote:I have read and heard maybe a few dozen times the "I don't want Ken N. here at BYU because we are not an option school" argument (I'm using the word argument here in its most loose form).

Ken N ran the option as a college QB, has coached the option for all but 2 years of his coaching career, and would need to completely need to change his identity. He would also need to basically give up all responsibility for the offense and the defense.

Look, football and play calling aren't rocket science. It's about rhythm. It's about knowing your personnel. It's about knowing how to create mismatches. It's about putting your guys in position to do what they do best. It's about calling plays that let your guys make plays.
I would have full confidence in Ken N. being able to do that.
In fact, if BYU does hire Ken N. He might be an even better head coach than Bronco for the reason that BYU won't all of a sudden become an option school - his bread and butter.
He'd be able to focus on both of sides of the ball. He'd be able to help both coordinators do what I outlined above - putting personnel in positions to create favorable matchups. He wouldn't be tied to one side of the ball. His absence to the defense or offense won't cause that side to suffer.

Re: New Coach Mini-Rant
Wrubell talked to Navy's PxP guy and he thought Ken is perfectly capable to run a NON option offense.
I almost think it's in insult to Ken to think as successful as he's been, he'd only be capable of coaching one type of offense. Or hire an OC to run the offense. Bronco was great at defense be even he tried to hire a DC so he could focus more on being the HC.

BYU fan circa 2005: "Bronco switching to a 3-4 defense will never work. All he's ever coached is the 3-3-5, so we obviously know he would be clueless implementing any other scheme."
