Surprises

Post by BoiseBYU »

I was surprised how well the defense played. This was a Rich Rodriguez team. Holding them to 16 points is impressive.

I was surprised at the O Line's play. Not one hold and big holes the whole game.

I was surprised that Taysom looks slower.

I was surprised that I forgot how special and downhill Jamaal runs.

I was NOT surprised that a freshman won it for us. That happened last year. ;)

I don't think Taysom is slower, I think UA did a really good job staying in their lanes and not letting him get outside on his runs. I did feel like the offensive game plan was pretty conservative. Taysom just did not look as aggressive tonight as he has in the past.

You very well may be right. To me he looked slower than in times past. He still played a good game. He was ice the last drive.

He did play a good game. It was just interesting to me on a couple of his runs, you saw him start to turn on the speed and I would think "there he goes" and then someone would come out of nowhere and take his legs out from under him. I decided after a while that AZ's D was dialed in on him and stayed at home to not let him get away from them.

I also thought Hill looked a step slower but that's not meant to sound like a knock against him. He looked poised he made the right reads all night and his throws were on target. Williams is a stud! The defense showed so many different looks tonight I was shocked how well they played. Really only one blown play that lead to the go ahead touchdown, the rest of the night they were solid.

Not trying to sound defensive here but just wait until someone blows an assignment on one of his runs and you will see that he hasn't lost a step. :)

I feel like Taysom has lost a step, but he is still very fast for a quarterback. He lost one in each of his comebacks to injury. But as Frdbtr pointed out, he will go the distance if the defense loses him.

The nice thing about having a dozen steps is it's okay if you lose one or two :)

It looked to me like he did exactly what Coach Detmer wanted him to do; be more measured and careful.

I liked the play calling and I loved seeing Ty and Taysom interact between plays. It looked so much more like a productive relationship than I ever witnessed with Coach Anae.

And I am hoping that the staff and team were holding something back for Utah.

I was so happy to hear Coach Sitaki bring up the Utah game in the sideline interview after the win tonight.

I HOPE the coaches told Taysom to try not to show Utah how much he has in his legs and arm. He definitely showed his heart, mind, and guts.

I hope they were holding something back too because to me the play calling seemed really vanilla to me. I don't know if it was because they were holding something back or because of what AZ's defense was giving them, or if it was because Ty hasn't installed his whole offense yet.

I was impressed at the O line with regards to opening up running lanes. I do think the pocket protection could use a bit of polishing.
