I like Hans, I think he is fair. I don't live in the SLC market but I follow him on twitter. While reporting about Utah he tells it like it is most the time. He doesn't tell it like a former Byu player. Hans is very loyal to Byu and has been very protective and fair recently regarding Bronco and the state of the program. He's the opposite of Derik Stevenson who talks before he thinks, thinks his opinion is the only right one and stokes the fire on all the things going wrong....all in the name of loyalty.

We need more Hans types in the SLC media.
The heck you talking about? I seems Stevenson put a lot of thought into his open letter to Bronco. And, frankly, he was a breath of fresh air and a blast furnace of truth all in one. People are sick of the dwindling returns, sick of the excuses, sick of the fact that Bronco's best team to date was in 2006 with Crowton players, sick of getting slapped around over and over again by Utah. It used to be that Bronco would lose a lot of the big games but would at least win the ones he was supposed to win. Over the last 5 years he's repeatedly not even done that. Somebody needed to say it - in just that way - and I'm glad Stevenson had the balls to do it.
+1 Well said. Prepare for scathing onslaught of attacks.

Anyone else a bit lost?

Yes. I have been wondering about that all day.

I understood him to mean "amplify" or "intensify" and was close to posting to attempt to confirm my understanding - but I didn’t want to be “that guy.” Apparently I have no problem being “that guy that supports that guy” though

Not a single player who has played under Bronco has ever even hinted that Bronco isn't the best coach for this team or that he acts like a bishop or mission president. These are fan fantasies.
Not true, I personally know players that are not big fans of his. They are nice and have some positive things to say but they are not close to BM.

I know two former BM players who like him but have both said he is not a father figure type guy. He is not close to the players and those he is close with are generally defensive guys. He says he has an open door but he does not. One player specifically told me he had a handful of 1x1 conversations with BM in 4 years, he is player you would all know and played defense. He did not say it in a bad way but just that BM was not close with players. Lavell was and he had those relationships and BM does not.

KVN may be an example of the opposite end of things, but that is the exception not the norm.

BM is not a big time motivator, he is steady eddie, that is why we come out flat so often. Players I know don't dislike him but he is not a guy they would run through a wall for. The feedback was he was uninterested in relationships with players and they were often frustrated because he did not work like other coaches do, he did not sit down 1x1 with players to coach and help, he left early to go home with family (hard to fault him but tough when other coaches put in the time).

Maybe BM should act like a Bishop and get to know his players. ;)
Sure thing, Bib, err ND. I believe you. Lets say it this way, while there have been a lot of former Bronco players to come out in support of him, not a single former Bronco player has ever come out against him as the head coach, and it seems like now would really be the time to do so.
Having wondered why cc rules get so selectively enforced.........When Hawkwhiner...er. Wing Dinger ........er....Blue........er...........Airwolfe..... errThe Winger kicks against the pricks. Never mind. All coaches have a disgruntled former player here and there. I am sure Bronco does too. LaVell was not immune. Back when Hawkthing was still stinking up his diapers, McMahon was not very fond of LaVell.

Bronco does not seem like the most personable and warm guy ever, but, I know players that admire him and would do anything for him. I do not know any personally who do not like him.

Hans, Stevenson, Vai, etc., are entitled to their opinions, but I would not assume that they represent the majority.
Perhaps the players with the biggest egos struggle the most with Bronco.

Hawk,

Why come out? Why would former players recently removed from the program come out?

It is not that they dislike him and need to be whistleblowers but I can tell you for a fact there are players that were not big fans, they did not hate him but never had a relationship with him. They way Bronco coaches is fine when you win, but is exemplified when you lose.

BM is a above average coach, his style would only work at BYU or a few other select schools. I don't dislike him, I just believe under Bronco we have not shot to get to the next level. He does not put in the time other coaches at top schools put in, he does not recruit well and tends to have a more impersonal relationship with players.......all this is not good for the program.

If BYU had better options I would say to replace him.
ND has burned through a lot of coaches since Bronco Faust was there - a fine man but unsuccessful coach. Bronco Willingham was on the list. Bronco Weiss. Most of those changes did not work out well for a decade or two.

I would be curious to see you rank all of the ND coaches since Faust and the see where you would rank Bronco Mendenhall relative to those coaches. BYU has had 3 coaches since 1972 and the coach in between Edwards and Mendenhall, makes me hesitant to assume a change would improve things. Then rank all of the Alabama Coaches Since Bear Bryant and look how long it took them to get it right. Changing coaches is risky. I would not change coaches until I thought it was a sure thing, and even then be nervous. Most BYU fans thought Crowton was a sure thing.

Fans claimed LaVell was leaving a bare cupboard, before Crowton benefited from the returning experienced players going 12-0 until Staley went down.

Back to Hans. He was the original football version of Jake Heaps and Chris Burgess. Press conference followed by disappointment.

This is literally true for every coach in the nation.
True but not to the same degree. Broncos style exemplifies it.
