Commit Watch: Updates

Post by Mars »

• Uncoverable: BYU commit Ross Apo (6-4 200 WR) was a nightmare for Fort Worth All Saints all night, rolling up 231 yards on 10 catches in a 55-38 win for Oaks Christian (Texas). Apo scored touchdowns on catches of 41 and 40 yards. Oaks Christian quarterback Thomas Johnson accounted for 442 yards overall (176 rushing, 266 passing).

• Blowout: The rematch of last year's 4A state championship game was all Skyline. The top team in the state of Washington swatted Issaquah 42-0 as BYU commit Jake Heaps (6-2 195 QB) threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more. He led Skyline to five touchdowns on its first six possessions. The win clinched the league championship for Skyline. "Our defense is pretty amazing," Heaps told the Seattle Times. "You want to talk about the best defense in the state, they're competing for it."

• Easy win: BYU prospect Harvey Langi (6-1 208 RB) ran for 122 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns in Bingham's 35-7 victory over Riverton. Langi scored on runs of two and 40 yards. 2011 BYU commit Baker Pritchard (6-2 240 DE/TE) added a seven-yard touchdown reception for the Miners.

• Coming through in the clutch: Boaz (Ala.) clinched a playoff spot with a 34-28 double-overtime win over Arab. BYU commit Drew Phillips (6-0 185 RB) scored both overtime touchdowns for Boaz and ended the game on a 10-yard scoring run in the second extra session. He also had a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and rushed 38 times for 188 yards.

• First loss: With Stanford commit Dallas Lloyd (QB) out with a separated shoulder, Pleasant Grove fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing 33-3 at Lone Peak. 2011 BYU commit Austin Heder (6-2 230 LB) had five tackles and 2010 commit Joey Owens (6-2 215 LB) had three tackles and a sack.

• Tough loss: BYU commit Algernon Brown (6-1 205 RB) caught a 55-yard touchdown pass in Skyline's 35-34 loss to Hunter. Brown also scored a 2-point conversion to tie that game at 21-all in the second half.

• Ouch: A shoulder injury to BYU commit A.J. Moore (5-10 190 RB/DB) didn't help Murrieta Valley (Calif.) in a 47-23 loss to Chaparral. Before his injury, Moore had five carries for 19 yards and one catch for two yards.

• Only one half of work: BYU prospect Joshua Quezada (6-0 198 RB) ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns in just a half as La Habra (Calif.) blasted Buena Park 62-0. Quezada broke three tackles on his way to a 44-yard touchdown to open the game and finished the first quarter with 112 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries.

• Still unbeaten: Brooks School (Mass.) moved to 4-0 with a 30-27 win over Rivers. BYU commit Jordan Johnson (5-10 175 DB/QB) ran for one touchdown and threw for another. He finished with 16 carries for 98 yards and also completed 4-of-9 passes for 66.

• Finding the end zone: Postosi (Mo.) stayed undefeated (8-0) with a 44-7 victory over Fredericktown. BYU prospect Brandon Bourbon (6-1 209 RB) ran 16 times for 113 yards and three short TD runs. He also scored on a 35-yard fumble return.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all other receivers combined for 35 yards????? Uncoverable is right!

I love the fact that we are bringing in so many athletes that come from a winning culture, and putting them into a system that will be going on their potential 5th year in a row of 10+ win seasons. Winning breeds winning.

Where would you put us on a scale of 1(never) to 10 (he's ours) on getting Quezada? I think we would be pretty scary again offensively if we reload with the likes of him at RB.

Apo's team uses multiple QBs, including Apo and our LB commit.

As for Quezada, fingers crossed. He really likes Washington and he visits Utah this week for the Air Force game. Too bad we foolishly passed on a second chance with Bourbon.
