11/2/2009 Bronco Speaks

Post by Lawboy »

In his press meeting today, Bronco brought up that the there were to be no major changes, just some minor tweaks. Said he met with his senior leadership group, and started prepping for Wyoming. Said that consistency is the hallmark of BYU. So basically, expect to see more of the same that we have seen so far. Luckily, that stuff works to beat Wyoming, AfA and UNM.

Frankly, this is exactly what I want to hear from Bronco. If he came out and announced wholesale changes, then we would know that everything that has been working over the past 5 years that has made BYU a very good team, was wrong. I, personally, am getting sick of all the negativity surrounding a BYU team that is on pace to go to a bowl game for 5 years in a row and win double digit games. yes, we did lose to TCU but that is because TCU is a better team.

I'm just hoping that "tweak" = new wrinkle.... somewhere. After Bronco said execution for the 3rd time, I thought about counting.... but decided against it. Just hoping the team is rested, fired up, and ready to pound the 'pokes this weekend.

I thought the point of playing the game was to win and to build the better team. 10 win seasons are great. 10 win season when you get blown out by the top teams on your schedule are not great. Beating teams with losing records is nice, not special. So far, BYU has beaten 1 team with a winning record--OU. That is not being negative, just pointing out the reality of the record.

Just beat Utah. And act like it is a big game. Because it is huge. HUGE!!!

I would be worried if Bronco came out making wholesale changes. The things that need to change are not going to change 8 games into the season. Anae is not going to suddenly learn how to make in-game adjustments. The team is not going to suddenly find heart and decide to fight when they get down. Our interior defense is not going to suddenly get quicker and grow the heart to fight for penetration at the line of scrimmage instead of letting the ball come to them. Leadership and heart are developed in the off-season, and Bronco's not about to make a staff change mid-season.

this part of the interview was left out, so I'll fill you all in on what it SHOULD have read...

"Having watched a lot of film of Wyoming already, Mendenhall said the Cowboys’ defense is playing well and that he likes their defensive schemes and strategy, adding "we plan to counter it with buttloads of draw plays, as well as surprise 30 yard passes on 2nd and 2's."

I kid :D

I'd say the greatest glimmer of hope in that article is that JACOBSEN IS BACK BABYYYY!!!!

That, and the last line was cool, too, about becomming the hunters. Let's hope Bronco and the team put their money where their mouths are!

Blah. I think that we do know that everything that he has worked for over the past 5 years is wrong in terms of beating good teams. broncos record against good teams sucks. Its not just TCU, its every top 25 team.

I am not knocking on what he has done or is doing. i am happy with where we are at, but he is the one that wants us fully invested and a quest for perfrection. he is the one with a goal of national champions. you can't deny that he has a problem, his current schemes and philosophy, with ranked teams. look at his records against such. its undeniable. tcu second year in a row they did the exact same thing and we still got the same result with tonga and a senior quarterback.

Bronco does need change. the good teams in our league have our number. not huge change but enough to deal with this obvious problem.

Coaches coach, players play. BYU does not have the D-line right now. But it is coming. I think BYU does have the right coaching staff, and can make ajdustments on the fly. Sometimes ya need the right players as well.

One thing I think is clearly lacking on this BYU tema is the ON FIELD LEADERSHIP! BYU needs another GENERAL BABY!!

The thing is that, most intelligent fans aren't asking for drastic changes right now. We're just asking for some changes i.e(Using Riley Nelson more, calling more bootlegs and screens, creating a new blitz package or two). If we really want to finish strong it's obvious that we need to make some changes. I don't see why we couldn't make a few changes or adjustments mid-season to improve ourselves. The only question is will the coaching staff do it?
