Re: BYU, ESPN closing in on a new deal
Wait, you mean Holmoe's repeated public comments over the course of the previous contract about how 'money isn't important and we're really going for exposure,' may have undermined our current negotiating position???
Shocker.
The best negotiation advice I ever received was to keep quiet and let the other guy do the talking and lay their cards on the table. Holmoe seemed to act like he was negotiating a 1-off instead of being involved in a repeated game.

Yeah I really don't want to pay for ESPN+. Next they'll come out with ESPN++. 6 games on ESPN. 5 on ESPN+ and 2 on ESPN++. Each with a separate pay wall. And then you'll have to pay extra to see the 4th quarter and another 5 bucks if the game goes into OT.

Well I think I would not pay and maybe discontinue Directv. So take that ESPN.
Wouldn't the replay be on BYUtv? I would just watch the replay.

That certainly sounds like a fair trade, exposure for money.snoscythe wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 9:47 am Heard today that the sticking point is on how many games ESPN wants to put behind the ESPN+ pay wall.
Fight is balancing exposure (i.e. games widely available without a paywall) and income (i.e. ESPN wants to cut $ if a certain number of games aren't behind the paywall of ESPN+).
Because there is no need to have the deal done tomorrow, it makes sense that the process just plays out. Any hand wringing by the fans based on rumors feels like it is that fan choosing to worry for the sake of worrying.

ESPN has a chance to make a big statement on the value of BYU with this contract. Or not

ESPN+ is the precursor to PPV everything sports related that didn't land on the major networks or the flagship ESPN channels.
It will start as a monthly fee, but soon surcharges will come for "prime" events.

I thought BYU fans were cheap so PPV would not make a lot of money.

Count me out for ESPN+ and PPV. Already costing me $50 for YoutubeTV plus Amazon Prime plut Netlix. I'm at my limit.

Oh, and I thought people got Amazon Prime for free 2-day shipping on stuff rather than for TV content.byufan4ever wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:44 amCount me out for ESPN+ and PPV. Already costing me $50 for YoutubeTV plus Amazon Prime plut Netlix. I'm at my limit.

Jack Ryan, Bosch, and Wheel of Time (coming soon) are all shows on Amazon Prime that alone are worth the cost.Fido wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:36 amOh, and I thought people got Amazon Prime for free 2-day shipping on stuff rather than for TV content.byufan4ever wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:44 amCount me out for ESPN+ and PPV.
