I don't think the brethren really want a football program anymore and this will be the excuse they need to cancel the sports programs at BYU.
For what it's worth, I do not see the cancellation of the football program over this, but to each their own - right?

Remember, Elder Bednar was the President at Ricks when they dropped sports (and Pres. Eyring was in support of the change). If I remember correctly, they said something like the change meant they lost 10% of the students and 80% of the problems at the school ....

That's kind of an apples to oranges comparison though. Ricks dropped sports when it transitioned from a 2 year school to a 4 year school. They needed to get more students on campus, and the campus, although beautiful is 2/3 the size of the Utah Campus, and they didn't need athletics there because the school in Utah had sufficient athletics for the system - which is why they dropped the Seasiders in Hawaii also.

Intercollegiate athletics brings something special to a school, which is why the Church continuously spends money to improve facilities. Aren't they currently right now renovating the stadium? I don't see them doing all of that just to drop the program foe a novel corona virus.

Oaks was Cosmo and Utchdorf is at every football game, along with several others of the 12, so I'm not too worried about sports being dropped yet.

I went to both Ricks College and BYU-Idaho and I did my capstone project about the transition. I understand why they dropped the sports. Bednar believed it was revelation. Still as a sports fanatic it was devasting to me. I also believe that cutting the Ricks to BYU pipeline has hurt somewhat. It was essentially a great place to develop players that would have been walk-ons at BYU into potential starters.

I didn't like them taking sports from Ricks either. They had higher rankings in Jr. college football than BYU did on their level. I know of 2 players that made the pros that had played there. The worst for me, however, was the wrestling. My friend always had them in the top 10 nationally and had 2 heavyweight national champions.

As far as what will happen to football, BYU will be lucky to have 7 games. I've said it before, we now would have been better off forming up a conference with the old rivals. The general authorities have more to do with that than we do however. It will be interesting.

When I picked which college to attend, it came down to BYU or CSU. I wanted to wrestle and study pre-veterinary medicine.

CSU had the better pre-veterinary program (by far) and was 15 minutes from childhood home, and to be honest more my environment with better hunting and fishing culture.

BYU had the better wrestling program under Schultz, was the legacy school, and was where all three older siblings were attending.

I picked BYU in the end, mostly because it was cheaper. Less than a month into my first semester, BYU announced it was dropping both pre-veterinary courses and the wrestling program.

Still kind of bitter on swallowing those pills.

I think that if the Sports programs at BYU become a financial liability, the church will drop them like a hot potato. That is the basis of my unsubstantiated theory. Like I said above, I am not trying to be a wet blanket. I just feel this way. If we only play 7 games next fall, the entire sports program will be hemorrhaging money. I hope it never happens, but I have this feeling that it will.

I don't know about the vet school but Bob would have made a top wrestler out of you. What weight were you?

Did you become a vet? That's a good profession. Do you work with ranches or dairies?
