From what I could search up on CB, there were claims that his LDS mom (who played for College of Eastern Utah/Lewis & Clark State/BYU-senior year) was pro-BYU but his non-LDS dad was anti-BYU so he never really considered BYU. If the interwebs are accurate, dad (Lewis & Clark State grad) is kind of a helicopter dad and has heavy influence. He had offers before committing to Utah to Baylor, Gonzaga, Portland State, and Utah State. Reportedly BYU was told to not bother. Who knows if big man Mark Pope gets some different respect than guard favoring Dave Rose got.

I actually taught his little brother (although maybe it was a younger cousin; same last name either way) three years ago when I was doing my student teaching. He was pretty anti-BYU, so it wouldn't surprise me if Matt was also not fond of BYU. But seeing what coaches did w/ Yeoli and our other bigs (Lee) Matt might just be willing to take a chance on BYU.
