I'm crossing my fingers that Heaps at least turns out to be John Walsh. Those BYU fans who remember their love-hate relationship with John Walsh will know what I'm talking about.

One of the problems I have is that even with his completions, many of them aren't thrown right where they need to be. When the receiver has to go down, up, or behind to make the catch, you aren't going to get many yards after catch. And we are not. If they were thrown in stride, several of our catches this year would have gone for longer.

I have been saying this about Heaps for a while --- he is the second coming of John Walsh -- the return of the dead-eye.

And this is not a good thing. Walsh was a dead weight on an excellent team. Sure, Heaps is not trying to play hung over like Walsh, but still.....

Does Heaps even check off on his receivers??????

And throwing into double and triple coverage or worse??

John Walsh was a curse upon BYU and BYU was blessed by his decision to go to the NFL draft as a Junior based upon the words of the great Mel Kiper. Too bad for Walsh that the NFL scouts cared for more than high school hype...

What tips are you talking about. One that looked like our receiver tipped it up was actually tipped by the defender. That is on the QB. The team will know whether the problem was Jake or the receiver when the receivers broke one way and Jake threw the other way.

On the MJ drop, it should have been thrown to his left but came to his right with velocity and spun him around.

Like last year, when weaker defenses fail to apply pressure or allow more separation, Heaps will get into a rhythm of putting the ball consistently precisely where it belongs and the offense will cluck Higgins.

I flew out for the game so I could try to make a better assessment from the stands.

I felt Jake was noticeably better than he was last week, but still needs substantial improvement which only weaker defenses will allow.

UCF had excellent pass coverage most of the time and they brought a reasonably good pressure to the QB.

Special Teams won this game.

I was actually content with Heaps. But heck, maybe that is because I understand he is a true sophomore who just played passably well against what was statistically a top 5 defense.

Bronco made a very interesting comment in the post game show, talking about how Jake is working to lessen the "artificial leadership" and just be himself. That certainly rang a bell for me. "Artificial leadership" is exactly what I felt when listening to Heaps pretty much up to this point. He's trying hard though, and it isn't like anybody else on the freaking offense was stepping up. Heaps also seemed much more realistic and accountable in his post game comments. "It was really hit and miss. My performance wasn’t that great, but we got the win." Thought he looked much more willing to take hits in order to deliver the ball as well. Definitely missed opportunities, but really, not too many bad decisions.

MAybe I am misinterpreting facial expressions and body language, but every time they show him on the sideline talking to a coach or on the phone after a bad decision, he looks like my 6 year old when he is arguing with me about how something wasn't his fault rather than when he is determined to fix something.

I'll have to disagree here. The two times BYU should have had TDs (and it was obvious when you see the WRs body language after the play) was when Diluigi had his guys beat on the left side of the field and was overthrown and the post to MJ. Both plays Heaps had plenty of time and overthrew his intended receiver. Another time was on 3rd down in the second half. He was flushed from the pocket and had plenty of time to assess the field. Instead he threw the ball into very good coverage right at the 1st down marker.

Everytime Heaps had even a little pressure he was making bad throws. But he didn't get rattled AS easily, and after the pick he was actually running toward the ball like he might attempt to get in the way.

decloug, go watch again. ON the route that JJ was open, Thorson got blown up and Jake had to rush his throw. He got hit as he released. On the deep ball to McKay--no excuses. Was a great play call, well executed, except for the throw. That is now 3 deep TDs Jake has overthrown to guys this year. 2 to McKay and 1 to Apo. WHen BYU gets a guy running free like that, Jake needs to make that play.

Jake is clearly missing throws. But honestly, on some plays I do not know if it is receiver routes or bad reads by Jake on some. Regardless, team is out of sync in the passing game. Not sure I am ready to bench Jake, and especially not for RIley(yeah, I saw his throw on 4th), but perhaps might be ready to give LArk a go if Jake sputters vs. USU.
