Bronco's Comments Regarding Nelson and Heaps

Post by byucougar1 »

During Tuesday's media meeting, he said he will evaluate the following in naming a starter for SJSU:

1. How they are handling the day to day pressure and attention of being a starter.
2. Who will provide the best leadership and production. Productivity immediately will win the day.
3. Selection is not a one-game decision nor a season decision but based upon short-long- term for each player and the program.
4. Selection is not set in stone for this week's starter being tenured for rest o season.
5. The selection will heavily involve Doman's input - and he does have a great relationship with Heaps but also is the one who pulled the trigger to use Riley in the 3rd quarter when he felt Heaps was ineffective.

After 2 days of practice, the reps between the two QBs have been about even. This scenario could go on for a while until one clearly establishes dominant production.

I honestly think the coaches want to put Heaps under some pressure here and see how he responds to it. His star has slipped, and while many factors go into it, he still has to be the one to pull himself out of the slide. This will be an interesting few weeks to see how both QBs respond, how the team responds, and to see how we look going into the TCU game. We are not a great team this year, so now is a good time to put some guys in uncomfortable situations to see how they choose to fight out of it. Hoping they both come out swinging.

Start Jake, if he struggles, bring in Riley. End of story! If you think Riley is the man, go back and watch the AF game from last year. Just saying...

This is how I am leaning as well. If Jake comes out weak again, start Riley coming out of the half and establish him as the main starter going forward. See how he does as the sole starter at that point.

ha ha, good one. If you think Jake is the man, go back and watch the last two USU games. Just sayin... And remember USU 2010 and USU 2011 are both far worse than AFA 2010.

USU 2010 is not a very good comparison. Jake played pretty well in that game but, according to KSL, there were 13 dropped balls by receivers that would have accounted for "roughly 200 yards and 3 touchdowns".

Thanks, I forgot about all those drops, but some of them were the "touched the tops of the fingertips" drops. Like the easy throw to Z. Mendenhall that would have been a sure TD if Jake could have thrown it 5 yards to the wide open fullback in the flats.

Determining a "drop" is not easy to do. Some drops are obviously the QB's fault and some are obviously the receivers fault but most are somewhere in between.

totally agree, I was just saying you can't say that all 13 drops were on the receivers. Nearly every game as a couple drops, but that USU game was pretty bad. Bottom line though the BYU offense couldn't keep up with a cruddy USU defense. OR the BYU defense couldn't keep up with the mediocre USU offense. But now we are getting way to objective! ;)

While Bronco has stated that they are takin their time in making the final decision for a starter consider what Riley offers the running game. When we rush for over 200 yards/game we generally win. This is because it favors our time of possession, wears on the opposing defense, and allows for play action passing - which keeps the defense off balance. Last year, when we began the turnaround, we established the run first before Heaps was able to become confident in his passing ability. Riley can put the run game back on the map again. In 5 games, SJSU is presently ranked #87 in total defense - surrendering 408.8 yards/game, yielding 19 TDs, and 5.87 yards/play.

As of 10-1, opponents had 930 yards rushing/4.63 yards-carry; 1114 yards passing, and gave up 31.2 points/game.

Opponents avg. 39.44% success on 3rd down conversions, 62.5% on 4th down conversions, and 83.3% in red zone success.

We should put up at least 30 points, and I believe Riley will be the one that opens up the passing game with his leadership in directing the running attack - with Jim leading the team again in rushing.
