There are quite a few "fans" from other schools in Utah who are actually Just BYU haters. It really bugs me.

Your article nicely illustrates one of the points of this thread that among the mormon community you have all types, including way-too-far-right folks that get paranoid that the church is pandering to liberals..These are the types that often either get ex'd for preaching their own doctrine or voluntarily leave to form their own church in southern TX. Okay I'm stereotyping but that article was just classic paranoia.

It is something that I am very concerned about though. And no it is not anti-BYU rumor flaming. It is from people who are genuinely concerned.

What on earth makes a person think like this? How does someone hate an institution that belongs to the very church they have committed their life to? Do they resent the fact that much of their tithing money supports BYU?

Why would devout members take so much pride cheering with the vulgarity that is the USU fan base or Utah for that matter. And no I am not being a self righteous BYU fan, I've been to sporting events with USU and Utah fans. They are both a step or two beyond the lines of normal social behavior. If BYU fans acted like that, I'd stop supporting their athletic program and find a better institution for my kids to attend.

I was going to ask some of these questions during dinner, but my wife kicked me under the table.
That's actually quite funny. I respect him. He understands the true rivalry between BYU and Utah. He just happens to be on the wrong side of it. A lot of BYU "fans" rooted for Utah against Pitt and Alabama - I don't know how you can do this. Don't give me the "better for the conference" crap. As a true blue BYU Cougar, I despise Utah and want them to lose every time. I would expect Puke fans to feel the same way about us. Your point that because they are members of the church, they should have a different attitude doesn't carry much weight. I don't think the Lord is too concerned with BYU athletics. I know he was dogging the institution but he associates BYU football with BYU the college. I do the same for U of U. I would grow tired of the obscenities and crap you'd have to put up with being a Ute fan. Might be tough taking the little ones to games. Interesting thread, nonetheless.

I understand why someone would do this. When BYU fans do things like http://www.byurejects.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and you have the jokes "What do BYU and U of U students all have in common? -- They all applied to BYU!!" In that kind of environment in the state of Utah, I can understand someone taking that pre-emptive strike so when that joke or something of that effect comes up, he has honest-to-goodness proof that he could've gone to BYU, but he chose something else.

When I went to law school, I applied to about 20 law schools because I had a squirrely application--really good LSAT, but two REALLY bad semesters at BYU on the transcript that hurt my scaled GPA badly (a 1.3 and 0.0 GPA in those semesters). While it wasn't my purpose in applying to so many schools, it has been a nice trump card when BYU or Texas law students start cracking on Baylor for me to be able to honestly say I was accepted to both, but given my personal situation and career goals, I turned down both to go to Baylor. What hurts is that of all places, I was rejected by the U.

So, is it ok to hate the U of U? Many of our Church leaders have come from that school. I have never lived in Utah (2 months at MTC don't count!) and have never understood the hatred some BYU fans have for the U. I understand it's an intense rivalvry and we claim that their fans are hostile to us, but I do not understand the hatred towads that school. Some Y fans may mock the U in jest, but some seriously hate them. Remember when Max Hall said he hated everything about the U and many Y fans, including on here, praised him.

How can we question/complain about Mormons hating BYU football when BYU football fans hate the U??

The fact that you haven't lived in Utah explains why you don't feel a burning hatred for the U. I try to be civil, I even have some friends who are pretty civil U fans, but the majority that I run into are a nasty bunch. I don't imagine you see many U fans outside of Utah (or get beer poured on you, or get cursed at, have stuff thrown at you, have them mock your church and your religion, etc.). The reason I dislike the U is the way they act and the fact that most of it seemed to be condoned by the school, not because I feel I need to distance myself from a church.

I can't afford a car, I use public transportation,
I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,

I am really tempted to make a joke out this but since you sound sincere I will be nice. Church leaders attending the U means absolutely nothing other than they escaped seemingly unscathed and yet were not able to improve the place while they were there.

If you want to be a U lover, then here is a little gem for you. If you want a teaching degree from the U, you have to take a course on the joys and normalcy of pornography. I wouldn't send my kid there if there were any other options.

I for one still believe that Max Hall and Austin Collie were right.

Paranoia? Do you read scripture or listen to conference talks? What happened to abhor, endure, tolerate, and embrace? Those who don't see a prophetic pattern here are willfully blinded.

The following scripture has a very familiar feel to it.

Mormon 8:38
O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell yourselves for that which will canker, why have ye polluted the holy church of God? Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies-because of the praise of the world?

I am not a U lover, just not a U hater although maybe I'm just ignorant (I admit it!) of what U really is like since I don't live in Utah. You are going to have to provide proof of your little gem. I did not find it on their website (first time EVER that I went to their website) or on any Google searches. Not calling you lier, but something like that is huge and needs to be backed up.
