It sucks to be right some times
This summer I got flamed for predicting 8 wins would be our ceiling. Turns out even I was being too optimistic and that I, get this, overestimated RN and BM. What sucks is that I eventually let myself be convinced we could get to 9 wins and that we could even somehow luck into a BCS bowl. Now we're looking to likely finish 7-6.
This sucks and there's nothing that we can do to fix it. I suspect those that are in such a position are getting closer to making a move and that BM's ice is just about as thin as possible. When we go 4-8 in 2013, he'll be gone for sure.
BTW, this isn't an "I told you so" post it's a "why in the yewt did I have to be right?!?" post.

I always thought Lavell retired too soon. Maybe we can get him back. And, Crowton was actually starting to improve when he got canned. He must be available. Maybe Tommy Hudspeth is still alive. Holmoe has coaching experience - ask Cal fans - they remember. And other than looking really tired these days - Andy Reid may be available and more willing to consider it than the last two times that question came up. Roger Reid is available - other successful coaches around the country can boast of never having played football.byutx wrote:This summer I got flamed for predicting 8 wins would be our ceiling. Hey - even The Bibster is available. Blue is Better would not be as Bitter if Blue was the coach.
And Leach just might be available. Just Might.
Hawaii fans are getting a little restless about Chow.
Who else - realistically - have we got?
Robbie Bosco?

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

It wouldn't take much to replicate Bronco's results. Take one of the top Utah HS coaches and I think we could have beaten Utah, BSU and San Jose STate because any other coach wouldn't be too stupid to bench a RN that just can't get it done.Cougarbib wrote:I always thought Lavell retired too soon. Re: It sucks to be right some times
Eight wins wasn't our preseason ceiling. And the season has borne that out. We easily could have 9 or ten wins right now. Just because we don't doesn't mean our ceiling is lower. Our ceiling was 11 or 12 wins in the regular season.

We might have a better win total if I was the coach, TrollBib.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know anything about the biz of coaching, but I *do* know that there is NO WAY in YEWT that Riley Nelson would have started for me at quarterback. Especially after that Air Force game. That was officially all I needed to see, to know that a quick fullback was trying to be a quarterback. I would have let him play special teams, on defense, wherever he could play his way onto the field. Just not at quarterback. He never was good enough to be a top 50 program starter, and I saw that 2 years ago.

Re: It sucks to be right some times
Riley salvaged our season last year and rallied the troops with leadership and unity. End of story. This year we have not been Good - makeshift OL, loss of starting RB - Alisa and great backup-Hill, and injured Riley. Not sure Lark would have made a difference - disn't see anything special to show he would make a difference. It is what it is.

He salvaged the Utah State game, and proceeded to beat up on patsies. Riley didn't do any better this year, than Heaps did last year. I've never heard of a player getting this much credit for a quarter and a half of football.

Re: It sucks to be right some times
Actually Heaps was far far worse than even Riley Nelson has been. The kid was a bad football player and his offense didn't win a single game when he was the starter and despite certain people's poor memories, he never played a good team, his best opponent was average at best. There's no chance we go bowling last year if Heaps doesn't get the bench, that's a simple fact.Raiderboy wrote:He salvaged the Utah State game, and proceeded to beat up on patsies. Riley Nelson's suckaage this year doesn't make Jake Heaps suckage last year any better.

Re: It sucks to be right some times
Spot on. The only thing I am baffled by is the decision to play a clearly injured and ineffective Riley at UT and BSU. I'm not saying Lark or Hill would've won the game. But I do not think they would've made it any harderbyucougar1 wrote:Riley salvaged our season last year and rallied the troops with leadership and unity. End of story. Yup. People compare Heaps' first half with Riley's second half which is like comparing Riley's wins to his losses (same level of competition.)Raiderboy wrote:He salvaged the Utah State game, and proceeded to beat up on patsies. So compare Riley's wins against Wazzu and Weber State against his losses to BSU and Utah and see how he does. That is the same thing as comparing Heaps in the first half to Riley in the second half. If you want a fair comparison, do it with Heaps in his spot starts in the second half.
Heaps is a fine quarterback, and he will do fine in Kansas. I wish we had him this year, compared to the "all he does is win / he can make all the throws" fantasy Riley that you all invented.
