Dead Girlfriend Hoax--Once again a T'eo Story Falls Apart

Post by snoscythe »

This is quite stunning. You start the article thinking, "okay, maybe this girl was just really into privacy and didn't live her life online," but then you get to the second half of the article and realize "$#|+, they really made this all up!"

You simply have to read it:

http://deadspin.com/5976517/manti-teos- ... -is-a-hoax" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The last four years I've slowly started thinking Bronco made a mistake in how he handled T'eo, but this development confirms all the doubts I had about Manti's and Brian's character after how his visit to BYU went down.

Interesting conjecture, but it's deadspin. These are the same guys that blasted BYU for being racist after Davies' suspension. They supported their claims with quotes from the expelled ex-football players caught up in the sex scandals under Crowton.

In other words, they like to tear down anything positive and bash it to generate web traffic.

Have you read the article? The evidence is pretty damning--including locating the living girl whose pictures were used on the "girlfriend's" twitter and facebook.

Not to mention that, unlike the BYU racism "expose" which was largely subjective and twisting of allegory and statistics, this is a fact-based article, and any false fact in here would be an immediate and undeniable basis for a libel suit by the T'eos.

I've read it. None of his "evidence" is backed up with sources. Everything he wrote could have easily been made up. Checking would be quite simple for anyone. If this really is a hoax then T'eo and ND trolled the entire country with NONE of the major news outlets in the country picking up on it.

I'm automatically suspicious of anything published on deadspin. The BYU article was equally damning with just was much "Evidence." All of which was either blatantly false or grossly exaggerated.

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to T'eo. While he does have issues (who doesn't) he seems like a genuine kid.

I was just about to post this.

There is a lot of questions about what is real or not. The simple fact that the pictures of the girlfriend who passed away are actually pictures of another person who is alive and well and has never heard of Manti T'eo is very strange.

Here's the take of the Chicago Trib's ND beatwriter, for those who somehow think the Deadspin story is less than convincing:
There's a lot to vet in the @Deadspin piece on Manti Te'o and the girlfriend hoax...but it's extremely thorough. Makes a stunning case.

It's more than strange it is fraud. Someone..RT from Cali or Manti from ND or both used a live woman's picture to depict a dead girlfriend....

Brett McMurphy is tweeting the following statement from ND:
Notre Dame coaches informed Dec 26 by Manti Te o & parents Manti had been victim of what appears to be a hoax. Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself w/Manti & then conspired w/others to lead him believe she had tragically died of leukemia Proper authorities continue to investigate, this appears to be, at minimum, a sad & very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
Which presents more questions than answers---if ND knew about this nearly 2 months ago, why is it just coming out now? Why did Teo continue to answer questions about the gf leading up to the Heisman ceremony and the BCS Championship if he knew it was a fraud weeks earlier?
