Poll - Who Out Coached Whom?

Post by Cougarbib »

Sorry - felt the need to check the pulse of the silent majority.

Who outcoached their opponent Saturday?

Be sure to explain why.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

We put up 47 points and our QB accounted for over 500 yards himself. To suggest Anae got outcoached is idiotic.

Mental errors, pick six, Secondary, and special teams (KO return) were more costly.

The reason this game was so close had nothing to do with Anae's playcalling, and the final TD drive was a thing of beauty. Anae wins!

It's an easy question to answer. Anae's offense scored 47 points. Am I missing something?

talent level and experience are a factor here.... I don't think Houston is as talented as people think. Thus, the Houston DC leveled the playing field by outcoaching Anae. Anae had the benefit of more talent. 6'6" receivers on 5'10" dbs, etc etc. The numbers don't tell the entire story. Gibbs figured out our Oline and in spite of injured linebackers and a small dline sacked the heck out of us and caused multiple turnovers. But at the end of the day our talent was too much for lowly Houston and their smoke and mirrors 5-0 record.

Remember the betting line was double digits in our favor, the final result wasn't.

But if numbers are the factor in peoples decisions... I suppose then you would have to argue that Bronco got outcoached by Houstons OC?

Craig

The talent thing cuts both ways. Our OL sucks. Like almost everyone else, Houston exploited it. Not coaching genius. I would go the other way. Why did it take the idiot so long to figure out what the world knows. BYU OL cannot handle pressure and Taters still makes mistakes when pressured. The world knows BYU Ol and TE are poor. They know we do not have a great FB. And how much of their tightening up the D in the 2nd half was coaching genius and adjustment and how much was JW sitting on the sidelines and playing a couple of series before that trying to play through the hip pointer until the pain got so bad he could not go.

And yes the line was -10 to -12. I do not think the experts expected BYU to score 47 points - let alone more. Check the over and under. It was the kick-off, punt, and run defense that fell short of everyones expectations. If you have any doubt of that, see how many people in the CC Prediction Poll get any points at all for Houston Points scored. Even subtract out 7 points for the pick 6 and safety if you think experts thought the #1 turnover team in the country would suddenly get zero turnovers from BYU who has been in turnover deficit. It becomes clear which team unit nearly blew this game.

Back to talent. Our defense is way more talented than the Houston offense. Way more. Had a let down. When you saw KVN missing tackles and many others missing tackles and a receiver shredding the entire D by taking a short throw to the house, and KO Returner doing the same thing for 95 yards, and the huge punt return, and DBs getting beat deep - that was not Robert Anae getting outcoached. That was Houston Offense and Special teams taking a talented and experienced defense to the woodshed - ditto special teams.

For once, the offense carried the team. Well twice. Texas. Maybe it is the water gone bad in the Lone Star State.

Exactly. Slow rollouts and deep passes against an all out blitz almost lost us the game. You can tell me "700 yards of offense" all you want, it doesn't mean that he wasn't out coached. The two aren't incongruous. He didn't take what the defense gave him, and he didn't make the defense play off balanced. He just threw down field because we had superior receivers that were better and taller. All you stat geeks that throw numbers out like candy? Here is some: 8 sacks, 3rd down efficiency 7 for 21. 3 turnovers, a pick 6, most of that due to bad playcalling (like running a sweep with Lasike for the 2 pt conversion for just one example).

And craig is right, you would need to say that Bronco was out coached by the Houston OC to state that Anae wasn't out coached by the DC.

Not exactly. Pick 6 was not due to coaching. It was due to poor execution by inexperienced players. It has taken creative coaching to get this kind of production out of a beat up OL lacking experience without a good tight end, Williams injured, and suddenly depending on very inexperienced running backs.

I am not arguing that Houston is great. I am arguing that their DC was taken to the woodshed for 20 minutes before he figured out the obvious and could even slow Anae down. The Int in the endzone was not poor coaching by Anae or great coaching by Houston. It was poor execution or BYU would have laid another 7 on that DC before he knew what hit him. Anae obviously hit him with something neither he nor any of you expected for 20 minutes.

All of the OL penalties. Inexperience. Unsportsmanlike penalty on the sideline. Killer.

And have you thought how absolutely disrespectful it is to JW to say that him playing through pain late in the half until he went out for the 2nd half was of little impact? The loss of JW slowed BYU down far more than DC adjustments did. 47 points. 54 if Hill threw to the right guy or threw it away the endzone. Sorry. JW would have been good for a TD or 2. 61. 68. Get real.

You would have a much easier time defending a claim that Bronco was out coached. He was.

The thing that almost cost us the game was not coaching, it was two interceptions, each of which were QB mistakes, not poor play calls. Also, the special teams giving up a TD, again, not Anae's coaching.
