Something tells me that if BYU scored a touchdown on every possession but one, and kicked a field goal on that one exception, there would be a thread started on why the offense failed.
With 47 points scored despite numerous hurdles (including mistakes), the offense did just fine.

So you both think that the all out blitz (that was brought about midway into the second quarter) was countered effectively by our offensive playcalling?mtnradio wrote:+1IowaCougar wrote:Something tells me that if BYU scored a touchdown on every possession but one, and kicked a field goal on that one exception, there would be a thread started on why the offense failed.

Does it really matter? BYU won the game. The offense is clicking. Yes some plays they got blown up, but when your QB throws for 400+, and runs for 100+ that's a good day, no if ands or or buts about it. The offense was solid. They will be solid tomorrow as well. It's time to stop complaining as if BYU lost the game.

Someone let us know if BYU TV airs the entirety again so I can DVR it. I have it at the point Navy finished to about right before that last drive.
DVRing us still an imperfect science.
The pace of that game is incredible.

Anae just might be the guy. Wisconsin DC says Anae is totally unpredictable because he just runs a bunch of plays with no rhyme or reason. Whooped Butt on Houston DC for 3 of 4 quarters. Destroyed Texas DC and HC careers.

Re: Watch the Houston game again and ask yourself...
Back in the days of Nielsen, Wilson, and McMahon, there was one game when it was third and 20. In the middle of the play, a flag was thrown and soon it was third and 35. The people next to me, who had never been to a McMahon game were really upset. Many of us students told them to have patient because this was a McMahon type of play.
Sure enough, McMahon throw a 40 yard pass. He did this several times during the game. One time, the opposing team didn't even accept the penalty because they were just being burnt badly by McMahon and the receivers.
In this game, the receivers were fast and McMahon would get the ball and do a quick dropback and just throw the ball and hit the reciever in full stride. Sometimes it didn't even look like Jim was looking where he was passing, he just threw the ball to where the receiver was supposed to be and they managed to get there most of the time.
I LOVE JIM!!!!!!

Ummm, let's see....... Yes. But just enough to WIN!!BlueIsBetter wrote: So you both think that the all out blitz (that was brought about midway into the second quarter) was countered effectively by our offensive playcalling?
Two questions:
1 - What is the BYU record under Mendenhall when trailing at the half AND after three quarters? Here's a hint: it's terrible!
2 - What was one of our biggest complaints about Anae 1.0? Mine was failure to even try to change in the face of his gameplan being exposed and destroyed by the DC on the other side of the field.
Regardless of how good or bad Houston is, this game flies in the face of those two deficits, and just might be the turning point toward three or four years of awesome football.
After the first three games of the season, I was getting really bummed about Hill's performance and prospect; I was beginning to wonder if the naysayers on this board were right (that was tough because my extended family in Pocatello has connections to the Hill family, and I personally want him to be the best BYU has ever had). I am so glad he was allowed to persevere.
Same is true for me with Anae. I shook my head in disbelief when he was named the new OC. I thought he should be on a short leash and I wondered if Bronco had actually BYU career in jeapordy.
But it looks to me that Anae has in fact shown a paradigm shift, and the offense struggles are not because of his ignorance or stubbornness, but simply his own growth and the development of talent to accomplish his new vision.
The three threads this week (UH DC> BYU OC, who outcoached whom, and watch the game again) have been generated or high jacked by someone with a very personal agenda.
I'm glad it's Thursday, a whole new week of games begin tonight, and we can get past this pile of junk that so many of us keep coming back to because we love BYU so much.

Don't forget that there are two teams on the field. Sometimes the other team makes a very good play. Sorry, but we have to play against another team who unfortunately actually succeeds in some plays. The key is to be successful more often than the opponent. I for one enjoyed that game more than any in a long time.BlueIsBetter wrote:So you both think that the all out blitz (that was brought about midway into the second quarter) was countered effectively by our offensive playcalling?mtnradio wrote:+1IowaCougar wrote:Something tells me that if BYU scored a touchdown on every possession but one, and kicked a field goal on that one exception, there would be a thread started on why the offense failed.

You didn't answer my question. The key is to run plays to counter what your opponent is doing to take away their advantages. Anae didn't do that. Against a more talented team we lose that game. Boise is a more talented team than Houston, so is Notre Dame, so is Wisconsin.
That right there is a recipe for a 7-5 season. Are you all happy with that?

Your question is as non-responsive to my opinion of the complaints as you thought Iowa's answer was to your question.BlueIsBetter wrote:You didn't answer my question. That people will complain about BYU's offense is a given ... they complain too much in my opinion (and I have been known to be a complainer too ... so I"m tarring myself with that same brush).
Did BYU effectively counter the blitz? yes. The whole time? no, that can almost never happen (or you'll beat the other team 91-0 and be accused of bullying). Remember, BYU scored as more points in the second half against Houston than all the other 5 teams have combined (iirc). Anae must have done something right. Was he as successful the WHOLE game as I wanted ... no, but then I'd like to see great drives leading to scores everytime. Anae did what Anae does ... he stayed with his plan longer than perhaps he should have. But do you think our last score showed that Anae beat their defensive changes?
Houston's "all out blitz" wasn't brought every play ... though they did stack the box a lot. Could TH checked in to some quick slants or outs and broken them? Probably ... but we haven't seen that happen effectively yet this year. Perhaps that is the next step the offense will take, they do seem to be making progress and improving as the year goes on.
