Recruit Watch 10/27
• Brick wall: A key last-second goal line stop, led by BYU commit Kona Schwenke (6-5 200 DE), secured a playoff win for Kahuka (Hawaii). The Red Raiders held on to beat Mililani 35-27 in the first round of the playoffs. Kahuku and Schwenke stopped Mililani's Dalaunte "Taz" Stevenson at the 1-yard line with 13 seconds left in front of 4,000 at Carleton Weimer Field. "Our coach (defensive coordinator David Te'o) said to stack the gaps. Mililani did a good job moving the ball," Schwenke told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin."It feels good. Our goal is to win the OIA, then states, so this is a big step."
• Glad to be back: Collin Koeshian's return from two games missed because of separated shoulder was, as expected, spectacular. Keoshian (6-2 225 LB/RB), a 2010 BYU commit, carried six times for 138 yards and three touchdowns as Santa Clarita Christian School (Calif.) destroyed Hillcrest Christian 56-0. Keoshian had touchdown runs of nine, 40 and 42 and was also 3-of-5 for 69 yards and a 31-yard touchdown pass. He also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. "He's a Division-I athlete and a difference-maker," SCCS head coach Garrick Moss told the Santa Clarita Signal. "When he's not out there, the confidence of the team drops."
-Didn't Mcgregor reference Keoshian as a kid who may be a better, faster LB than any we put on the field currently?
• Big second half: After getting just 58 yards on 16 carries in the first half, BYU commit Drew Phillips (6-0 185 RB) had a big second half in a 16-7 Boaz (Ala.) victory over Etowah. Phillips carried 22 times for 112 yards in the second half, including a 32-yard run on fourth-and-15 to allow Boaz to run out the clock. Boaz finished second in its region and will have home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
• Good game: BYU commit Jake Heaps (6-2 195 QB) was 20-of-27 for 329 yards and three touchdowns as Skyline (Wash.) routed Redmond 42-7. Skyline plays Bothell on Thursday for the KingCo 4A league championship.
• Hard to cover: BYU commit Ross Apo (6-4 200 WR) of Oakridge (Texas) scored twice in his team's 48-20 win over St. Stephen's Episcopal. Apo caught six passes for 109 yards and had touchdown receptions of 4 and 31 yards. In seven games this season, Apo has 29 catches for 632 yards (21.8 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns.
• Playoff bound: BYU prospect Harvey Langi (6-1 205 RB) scored on an eight-yard touchdown run as Bingham blasted Taylorsville 45-7. Bingham is 9-1 overall and will play either Brighton or Jordan in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs on Friday.
• Still unbeaten: BYU commit Alani Fua (6-4 210 LB) returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown as Oaks Christian (Calif.) shutout Carpinteria 43-0. Fua also contributed a 23-yard catch from the tight end position as Oaks Christian stayed undefeated (7-0).
• Finding the end zone: BYU commit Algernon Brown (6-1 205 RB) scored three first-half touchdowns is Skyline's 59-35 win over Murray. Brown scored on runs of 8 and 46 and on a pass reception of 37 yards. Skyline travels to Syracuse on Friday to open the Class 5A playoffs.
• More of Moore: BYU commit A.J. Moore (5-10 190 RB) sat out most of the second half but scored twice in the first half as Murrieta Valley (Calif.) hammered Temecula Valley 55-7. Moore had four rushes for 44 yards and a touchdown and added three catches for 114 yards and another score.
• Touchdown: BYU prospect Justin Utopo (6-3 260 DE/TE) had a two-yard touchdown catch as Lakewood (Calif.) blanked Jordan 25-0. Lakewood is 7-1 overall.
• Easy does it: BYU prospect Josh Quezada (6-0 198 RB) ran 14 times for 62 yards in limited work as La Habra (Calif.) clobbered Sonora 32-3. Quezada had two touchdowns called back because of penalty.
• Clinched: BYU commit Kori Gaines (5-9 175 DB) and his Grayson (Ga.) teammates earned their second straight region championship and remained undefeated (9-0) with a 56-0 drubbing of Meadowcreek.
• Not enough: Despite 116 yards on 13 carries by BYU commit Jordan Johnson (5-10 175 DB/QB), Brooks School (Mass.) lost its first game of the year, 35-13, to Belmont Hill. Johnson had a 20-yard touchdown run that gave his team a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.
• What a game: BYU prospect Brandon Bourbon (6-1 209 RB) was the star as Potosi (Mo.) held on to defeat Ste. Genevieve 54-48 in triple overtime. Bourbon carried 24 times for 279 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his scoring runs -- 27, 7 and 92 yards -- came in the first half.
