Do I really have to pull out the stats. You know what I am talking about. I am pretty sure we played more good teams than those three in four years.Schmoe wrote:Bronco doesn't beat good teams? What would you call Oklahoma, TCU 2006 & 2007, Utah 2007, etc?

I don't care who he does it because of. Its just my opinion on a message board because I love BYU football.catholicmat wrote:I believe he will make changes, but he will not do it because of us fans.jonnylingo wrote:i agree to some degree. But our d-line did find against OU. Part of our success was that we were bringing lots of different looks and letting our d-end be a little more agressive. I don't think its our d-line as much as it is our inside linebackers. if they were better jorgenson and denny would be more free to go around the outside and get more pressure on the qb.catholicmat wrote:Coaches coach, players play. BYU does not have the D-line right now. But it is coming. I think BYU does have the right coaching staff, and can make ajdustments on the fly. Sometimes ya need the right players as well.jonnylingo wrote:Blah. I think that we do know that everything that he has worked for over the past 5 years is wrong in terms of beating good teams. broncos record against good teams sucks. Its not just TCU, its every top 25 team.frdbtr wrote:Frankly, this is exactly what I want to hear from Bronco. If he came out and announced wholesale changes, then we would know that everything that has been working over the past 5 years that has made BYU a very good team, was wrong. I, personally, am getting sick of all the negativity surrounding a BYU team that is on pace to go to a bowl game for 5 years in a row and win double digit games. yes, we did lose to TCU but that is because TCU is a better team.
I am not knocking on what he has done or is doing. i am happy with where we are at, but he is the one that wants us fully invested and a quest for perfrection. he is the one with a goal of national champions. you can't deny that he has a problem, his current schemes and philosophy, with ranked teams. look at his records against such. its undeniable. tcu second year in a row they did the exact same thing and we still got the same result with tonga and a senior quarterback.
Bronco does need change. the good teams in our league have our number. not huge change but enough to deal with this obvious problem.
One thing I think is clearly lacking on this BYU tema is the ON FIELD LEADERSHIP! BYU needs another GENERAL BABY!!
but i think the issue the qb knows exactly what we are doing on defense becuase we don't change it up. Do you think Dalton was every mentally stressed trying to figure out what was going on? No not at all.
I don't want to sound whiny (which i know I do) so i will shut up now. I am quite happy with how well byu is doing. I just think there are changes that clearly need to be made. Bronco needs to look at his record against top 25 teams and say, why is this, and then make a plan on how to change that. his consistency approach works great as to most of our conference, but i think its hard to argue that it does not work against top 25 teams or even just top 50 teams. people have our number. they know our system. we have to make some changes.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I think its attributable to teams picking up on what we do and preparing for it and then us not changing anything to combat that. There are surely a number of factors though.frdbtr wrote:I would submit that the bad losses over the last couple of years is more due to players heart and desire then coaching. How many bad losses did we sustain in 2006 and 2007 with the same coaching staff? There is something lacking in this current teams leadership, I don't know what but the current makeup of the team of the last 2 years has led to the team quitting as soon as they get down by a couple of scores which leads to bad losses against good teams.jonnylingo wrote:I don't want to sound whiny (which i know I do) so i will shut up now. So why didn't oklahoma utilize this tactic? they have access to BYU's game film just like everyone else? I am not trying to absolve our coaching completely of responsibility for the TCU and FSU losses this year but I am seeing a pattern that only started after Some pretty good players on offense and defense graduated. (cameron Jensen, Beck, Kehl, Poppinga, Nixon). The coaching staff was the same for all of those years but for some reason the last 2 we have had multiple blowout losses, up until then the team fought hard in all games and kept close when we happened to lose one. IMO, there is no other explanation. It will be interesting to see when the leadership on the team changes again over the next couple of years to see if the blowouts continue, if they do I will conceed youir point.jonnylingo wrote:I wholeheartedly disagree. There is a reason that conference games are often tougher to win---familiarity. And as to the OU game, the reason we did so well in that one is because we did mix it up, and ran things OU had not seen on film and were not prepared for. OU players talked about it after the game. In particular, the blitzes BYU ran they had not seen and were not prepared for, and it showed. Just goes to show that some wrinkles from game to game can be helpful.

Re: 11/2/2009 Bronco Speaks
BYU won the Oklahoma game because Oklahoma was playing a TE at center who had no idea what the hell he was doing when it came to calling out protection packages, and BYU took advantage of that. BYU game-planned for the weakest link and it worked for them.
To suggest, however, that because this strategy for gaining penetration would work for all other opponents, is to ignore the fact that Oklahoma had a very real weakness there. BYU was exploiting a weakness--a weakness absent in every other team we have played. To take the Oklahoma game and suggest that it is a blueprint for success is to take a very cursory view of results without understanding how those results were achieved. The Oklahoma game plan does not work against experienced offensive lines with veteran centers.

Re: 11/2/2009 Bronco Speaks
The answer is becuase Bronco switched it up against them. He did it for that game. He put together a gameplan. It worked. he outcoached a better team. It goes as proof to me that when he does that we can beat top 25 teams. On the other hand, didn't much of a change in schemes at all going into the TCU game.frdbtr wrote:So why didn't oklahoma utilize this tactic? they have access to BYU's game film just like everyone else? I understand your point an agree for the most part. But I their oline was still full of very talented players, more talented than our defensive players. Part of the reason they did so badly was because we showed them new looks that had not prepared for on film. if we had come out the same, they would not have been so confused.snoscythe wrote:BYU won the Oklahoma game because Oklahoma was playing a TE at center who had no idea what the hell he was doing when it came to calling out protection packages, and BYU took advantage of that. i am tired of this topic and over it. The coaches will do what they think is best and i will keep being a fan and enjoying wining close to 10 games each year which is better than most fans can say of their teams. The coaches are doing a good job.
