Yeah, because anyone could show up and hit 20+ wins except for this disappointing year where he only got 19. Cashing a paycheck. There are issues, sure. But come on....

Re: Dave Rose retiring, press conference today
How do we know that Coach Rose was actually cashing any paychecks? Most people have direct deposit these days. Sounds like the staffer doesn't even know what they are talking about. Sounds like someone who has never done anything great in their life being bitter and spiteful towards someone who has in the past, but is no longer doing great things. Clearly it is the right time for Rose to go. There's no real point in being a jerk about it.snoscythe wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2019 9:37 am I heard from a BYU staffer yesterday that the only thing Dave Rose has done well the past few years is cash BYU's paychecks.
Would have been nice to see a good guy go out on top, but there were too many self-inflicted wounds the past few seasons, starting with the total mis-handling of Nick Emery's violations.

I think we all noticed a less impassioned Rose.
That said, let's be classy about it and thank the man for his time.

Congratulations to Coach Rose on so many levels. Not least of which is knowing when to step down. I respect that. It's a tough thing. I doubt most of us here would be able to do it--I know I probably wouldn't. 20 win seasons every year but one is nothing to sniff at. And I strongly believe he would have had a 20th win if the WCC tourney format hadn't been changed.
He gave BYU a lot of great hoops moments. He fought back from cancer. He was a good example.
I wish him a wonderful, happy retirement. I imagine we'll see him back some way some how. Maybe (once again) taking over for Steve Cleveland. Hard to keep a guy like Coach on the couch for long.
I'm hoping for Madsen but won't be disappointed with Pope. Rose's comment that 4 of the last 5 BYU head coaches haven't had D1 experience leans me in the direction of Madsen. I'm hoping Rose had some influence on his successor. I get bugged at organizations that don't solicit the views of the outgoing incumbent.
So long, Coach Rose. And thanks for all the wins!

My feelings upon hearing the news: gratitude for a man who rescued the BB program when he took it over. Gratitude for some great seasons and wins over the years. Gratitude for a class man. Did he make mistakes? Sure. Could some things have been done better? No doubt. But Dave Rose leaves as a legend. Whoever follows him has some big shoes to fill.

I've been a harsh critic of his recent lack of success, but he did do some great things and he is a class act. Thank you Dave Rose for your time.

I know very little about Madsen as a coach, but he seems like a high profile candidate. Even though Pope has some legit playing pedigree Madsen definitely has the bigger name IMO. Would that help to get better recruits? I don't know.

I think next year both Madsen and Pope would have about the same amount of wins. The following year I think Madsen would have more wins. I Believe he'll attract more kids and I feel he has more of an upside in his coaching abilities.
